The Independent Spirit Awards nominees for 2018 were announced today, bringing recognition to the sorts of films that used to fly under the radar, but which are now often considered to be serious Oscar contenders. Two of 2017's most vigorously loved features, Get Out and Lady Bird, show up in multiple categories, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Male and Female Leads respectively, and others. (Though Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig is not nominated in the Best Director category.)

Seattle's own Lynn Shelton is also among the nominees for the "Bonnie Award," named for Bonnie Tiburzi Caputo, the first female pilot to fly for a major U.S. airline (American Airlines, which provides the $50,000 unrestricted grant, given to "a mid-career female director." So Yong Kim (Lovesong, For Ellen, In Between Days) Chloé Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me) are also nominated for the grant.

The awards will be held on March 3, 2018, hosted by comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney. Ava DuVernay is this year's honorary chair.

The winning filmmaker will exhibit innovation, diversity and uniqueness of vision while having a history of transforming perspectives through rich stories. The recipient will receive a $25,000 cash grant to create a short film inspired by Seattle’s independent spirit. This film will premiere during the Spirit Awards broadcast.
