Care About What Happens to the Viaduct?

Posted by Erica C. Barnett on Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 4:59 PM

Want to make sure Frank Chopp's crazy-ass tunnel-in-the-sky proposal doesn't make it past the drawing board?

Then head down to tomorrow's Viaduct Stakeholders Meeting at Town Hall (1119 8th Avenue, 4:30-8 pm), where the folks appointed to hash out the various viaduct replacement proposals will talk about which of the eight viaduct replacement options works best to move people and goods through the city. Speculation is that Mayor Greg Nickels, Governor Christine Gregoire, and King County Executive Ron Sims are eager to narrow down the options now, before the legislature reconvenes in January, so that Chopp's proposal will be firmly off the table.

I was wondering how long after the election we were going to start arguing about this again.

The governor should declare the structure unsound and close it immediately. We can then find out the real impact of its absence on the region's traffic while prompting city and state leaders into action. Now that she has won reelection, what does she have to lose?

I went to one of those Viaduct Stakeholders meetings once and I thought it was a completely pointless exercise. PowerPoint presentation, five seconds for questions, make all the annoying community activists feel somehow involved and hopefully shut them up.

If I weren't going to something already, I'd be at that meeting. Probably with a big stack of dynamite and an offer to donate my services attaching it to the Viaduct.

StC @ 1:

The Choppbox is a tunnel...in the sky! The only thing worse than a new viaduct is Chopp's plan to build a mile long mall between our waterfront and our downtown.

This idea only has traction because Frank is the speaker. The emperor truly has no clothes.

I'm really curious how the through-put studies came out and what blend of options makes it to the end-game. I'm also curious about the costs, so I'm guessing I'll be seeing you there.

I'm visualizing a billboard advertising Pemco insurance:

"Pemco profile #52. Kooky Seattle legislator-for-life." And there would be a picture of Frank Chopp.

If you've ever lived outside the USA, you've seen examples of this design before. It makes sense, and is more cost-effective than a tunnel. Selling retail space inside helps pay for the structure as well. The view it would block is already blocked, and all the 'fumes' already exist.

But yea go ahead and spill your latte all over yourselves in your disgust, haters. You are the reason Seattle does nothing good for itself.
