Today in Seattle

Posted by on Tue, May 12, 2009 at 10:34 AM

A low of 42 degrees; currently 44. Looming dark clouds and occasional spitting rain. My bike seat, which appears to have no fissures, became permeated with water from being left out overnight, and now when it is sat upon, it emits drippage down the interior pantslegs. Upon arrival at the office, I got stuck in my down coat; I love you, coat, but when your zipper sticks, as it often seems to, up near the collarbone zone and I can't get out of you and I'm indoors where it's kind of hot, well, you cause a very specific panic.

Freed from my coat, I saw Paul Constant in the hall, and he said he moved his short-sleeved shirts to the front and his long-sleeved shirts to the back in his closet yesterday. Thus he hexed us all. Thanks a lot, Paul.

78 degrees (already!) and not a cloud in the sky in Denver. You guys live in the wrong place.

That's it, I'm forced to comment. This is the kind of stuff that fucking cracks me up. Your subtle humor on everyday events is why Slog is my all-time favorite RSS feed. The swine-flu obsession especially entertained me. Thanks for the laughs!

Also, I currently live in San Francisco and am considering a move to Seattle. This story is exactly why I'm hesitant. What's better: Living with the love of my life or adequate weather?

San Franciscans have zero grounds for denigrating Seattle's weather.

Bethany Jean, a grocery bag makes a great seat cover, either before or after waterlogging occurs.

How many posts were there on Slog last year at this time complaining about the slow onset of Sprang?

And this posting summarizes exactly the reason I left Seattle.

42 degrees is hot.

Oh, wait, you meant that Fahrenheit they use in only one country in the world.

But it was sunny and nice out just a minute ago.

Sometimes, just sometimes, your off-topic inanery makes me laugh, WiS. It's pretty rare, but it happens.

I flipped out this morning at the thought of putting on pants. I simply couldn't do it--it felt too constrictive, too..wintery. So I'm in a dress, bare-legged and in ballet flats, and I'll probably be cold when I leave my climate-controlled office. But pants be damned! Damned, I say!

It's global warming, and don't let any tell you it's not happening. Oh it's global "climate change" now is it? If this climate change stuff keeps happening Seattle will be the only place to live as we'll still be looking to hit 50F at the end of June while the rest of the planet bakes with 95F at the end of March, or so we're led to believe. WHY does every where else get all the warm weather?

cedarthvader -- you are my hero. I feel exactly the same. May is the month of not wearing pants. I'm going to see how long I can hold out with skirts and dresses. Armed with leggings and boots, I think I can do it!

@4,

Seattle's not that much colder than SF, but it is wetter and gloomier. And, of course, you're a short jaunt from any number of places that are warmer and less windy and foggy than SF. We don't have that luxury.

Don't you mean Bored Shorts, Will? (@14)
Oh, you always have those on, my bad. :P

Just let me break into song right now, treacle. Imagine me singing "Business Time" by Flight of the Conchords ...

(looks around puzzled as treacle fall screaming to the floor)

Outside of places veering toward tropical climates (SoCal and Florida, e.g.), most of the US has pretty unpredictable weather. May in the midwest sees far more dramatic and sudden temperature shifts than we usually see here.

In other words, the "if you don't like the weather in X, just wait fifteen minutes!" joke gets around. Seattle isn't unique in this regard.

This is precisely why I'll miss Seattle when I leave. Unpredictable weather makes life so much more interesting.

At least that ridiculous winter is overwith. For now I'm just happy I don't have to stay holed up in my fucking burrow all the damn time.
