We Are Winning

Posted by on Thu, Jun 4, 2009 at 6:19 PM

We haven't won gay marriage in another state, exactly. But same-sex matrimony has conquered in the land of the Sims! Reports Towleroad:

Lyle Masaki at AfterElton tested the new version of The Sims to see if gays and lesbians could get married like any other couple. He reports: "...after a week of game time, I was able to get a male couple to plan a wedding party and tie the knot."

Bummer, only six friends at the wedding.

So two of the Jonas brothers got married at a party attended by Barack Obama, Shannen Doherty and the Olsen Twins?

Wasn't this already in The Sims 2?

@2,

As far as I know, yes.

In all fairness, the couple has only existed for a week.

I don't think the guy doing tai-chi counts as a wedding guest.

Sims is way ahead of us, they can get married to aliens, zombies, werewolves, and vampires too.

@2,3: Sims have been completely bisexual since the original.

@2,3

In The Sims 2, gay sims couldn't get married, but had the functionally equivalent option to "join union." In addition, some rewards associated with these unions were inferior to those for marriage. (For example, fulfilling a sim's want for a relative to "join union" would net fewer points than the want for a relative to get married, and sims who had the lifetime goal of marrying off six children wouldn't be satisfied if some of those kids were gay.)

In The Sims 3, gay sims can actually marry. Presumably (hopefully) the other discrimination is gone as well.

My Sims have also successfully managed to have several same-sex hookups with people who refused to leave their houses in the morning.

Actually, you could download a crack for the Sims 2 that would change "join union" to "marry".

Glad to see they fixed this for #3.

You've been able to do this since the sims 2, and they fixed the points disparity in one of the patches.

Here's hoping tS3 improves general romance realism; in tS2, if two sims know each other well enough, one flirt will have the pair of them falling head-over-heels in love, utterly without concern for type, orientation or existing relationships. It's all a bit 1950's - romantic actions = mutual love forevermore, and they can't have one-night stands or casual hookups. Very moral ;)

@4 and more to the point, wouldn't you want to play the field a little longer than one week?

@10 Yeah, I remember having all kinds of same-sex couples move in together since the beginning. For a gaming dyke in the Cali Central Valley, it was a nice escape.
