Here's What I Wish Were Outside My Window Instead

Posted by on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 9:49 AM

Around the other side of the Katzen Arts Center in D.C., where I arrived yesterday, is this 2006 Jules Olitski, which looks like this artist and this artist made a baby, and then this artist ate its insides. I had no idea this is what Olitski was up to before he died in 2007. Here's his web site, where there's not much other work like this, either.

"...which looks like this artist and this artist made a baby, and then this artist ate its insides."

might be the best sentence in an art review, ever.

No, it's not awful. What I forgot to mention is sort of astonishing about it is that the metal looks like cardboard, even close up.

I just realized something. You know what I like about public art? You can touch it.

In museums and galleries, there's a very firm no-touch policy. Totally understandable, but sometimes touching is an important part of the art experience.

No Jen, it's awful. This is truly hideous, even if they made it look amazingly like cardboard up close.

Tough crowd! These are old drums from cement mixers that have been cut, welded, and painted by a twentieth-century master with a sense of humor.
