The Blame Game 2

Posted by on Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 3:12 PM

And this is funny...

WHEREAS, we believe our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis; and

WHEREAS, this nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery; and

WHEREAS, alarmed that the Government of the United States of America is forsaking the rich Christian heritage upon which this nation was built; and

WHEREAS, grieved that the Office of the president of these United States has refused to uphold the long held tradition of past presidents in giving recognition to our National Day of Prayer; and

WHEREAS, deeply disturbed that the Office of the president of these United States disregards the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior...

...and it's not parody. It's a resolution introduced State Rep. Sally Kern (R) in Oklahoma. Jenny Sanford isn't blaming gay marriage for her husband's infidelities, but Kern is blaming the recession on same-sex marriage, porn, abortion, etc.

She's the same cow who earlier proposed that Asian-Americans should have to change their names to something easier for white people to pronounce. Because "Lee" is hard; "Yastrzemski" is easy.

Fucking Oklahoma.

Wait, what?

"WHEREAS, deeply disturbed that the Office of the president of these United States disregards the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior..."

Huh? Did I miss the announcement of August as Debauchery Month, or what?

I was dying to know what she was actually proposing in the resolution. The Whereas's are funny, but the Therefore is priceless. In short, she's resolving that the state legislature of Oklahoma ask God not to smite us.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we the undersigned elected officials of the people of Oklahoma, religious leaders and citizens of the State of Oklahoma, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world, solemnly declare that the HOPE of the great State of Oklahoma and of these United States, rests upon the Principles of Religion and Morality as put forth in the HOLY BIBLE; and
[...]
BE IT RESOLVED that we, the undersigned, humbly call upon Holy God, our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer, to have mercy on this nation, to stay His hand of judgment, and grant a national awakening of righteousness and Christian renewal as we repent of our great sin.

I am so confused. I thought people like her wanted God to smite us, you know, to get on with the Armagaddeon thing (minus Bruce Willis)?

Poor Sally. She has no peanut butter cookies or leather bars in her life. I'd suggest she check out that clip on youtube, "I'd like to dress you up in leather" (great song and dance routine, and lovely men), but it was removed because the poster didn't have permission.

Seriously, those who appear to live in fear require a level of "Fundamentalism", they find comfort in fixed rules and unquestioned doctrines, which if not checked can become legalism. It makes it easy to become a religious elitist who judgementally frowns upon those who are not as "spiritual" as they think themselves to be.

gee Dan, how can you be such a clueless bitch?

you post gut-wrenching social mayhem all day but the only conclusion you are able to squeeze out is "it's no fair not to let gays marry".

you miss the big picture that the breakdown of the family (yes, "family"- mom, dad, kids) is the root of the social problems that are destroying our civilization. that's right- civilization.

let's remind ourselves what the "ideal" that we should strive for is- a woman and man who postpone sexual activity until marriage then are faithful to each other and are devoted to and sacrifice for other each and their children.

families like this are much less likely to infest society with abused kids, divorce, domestic violence, poverty, substance abuse, etc etc (fill in your favorite social pathology)

even families like this will experience some social problems but much less than any other "family" model you can advance.

the "ideal" doesn't happen on it's own, it takes lots of promoting and encouraging and education. enlightened societies do that. ours used to.

the "family" is undermined by extra-marital sex (in all it's flavors and varieties), pornography, prostitution and rock and roll music.

90% of government social spending is devoted to making up the failings of the family. government paying people to do things families used to do. it isn't working.

how many families that end of it the assorted "watch"s are the ideal?
none? hardly any.

"family values" has been a recurring social battle since the Greeks and Romans.
some things don't change.

go ahead. snicker.
then post some more social mayhem.
scratch your head. wonder.
don't dare connect the dots.

Want to show me where exactly it is written in stone that this is supposed to be the case? Why don't you leave me (and what I do in my own home) the fuck alone and not try to force your archaic beliefs down my throat?

America was founded by a bunch of atheists, we have no Christian roots other than the Christian oppression we were attempting to get rid of.

And promoting abortion? I'm really curious to find these pro-abortion people, the kind of people who believe abortion is a type of birth control, I'd really like to meet them.

@ 22: You take joy in the suffering you believe awaits strangers. There's a word for people like you: sociopath. Never mind the delusions of grandeur and all that, that's a whole 'nother mental disorder in play.

As for the original post: Economies are cyclical. They have always been cyclical, and always will be. Anyone with a fourth grade education can look up the figures to prove it.

HOWEVER, over time, the economic fluctuations have become less powerful, and recessions shorter and less severe than what they were, say, in the 19th century, where they were accompanied with little, if any, government intervention (whether Keynesian or Monetarist). If anything, the situation has gotten better rather than worse in this regard.

Now, as for this belief that child abuse comes from perceived increases in perceived sexual immorality amongst consenting adults: CITATION NEEDED.

We have increased government observation and enforcement of laws against child abuse in recent decades, so whether or not there was an actual increase in child abuse, we're going to see more of it, simply because child abuse is less likely to be swept under the rug, and more likely to end up with an adult in prison. We should expect, then, that child abuse rates, c.p., should be going down.

Of course, people had sex even in more conservative times, and even in the colonial era, it was quite common for brides to be pregnant. There's a difference between "we don't talk about it" and "we don't do it." Don't be silly, there is no time period, no place in the world ever, where people all followed this sexual standard of "one man, one woman, only having sex with each other, and only after being married." (See also "Gays in Iran" and "Alexander Hamilton: the mere existence of")

@9 and @22 oh, that was amusing.

Go ahead and try, just try to convince yourself that our world isn't so fucked up because of closed minded bible raping pieces of shit. If you could take a deep breathe, relax a little, maybe try an orgasm on for size, and mind your own fucking business, let other people their live their own lives, relieve yourself of the duty of damning other people ... maybe ... just maybe ... a bit of that understanding and acceptance that your good pal JC was preaching about might actually rear it's lovely head.

Besides, if your "God" really hates teh Gays, then let "Him" be the judge ... you just worry about your own fucked up life.

You fail to realize that all of that domestic abuse, unwanted pregnancies and premarital sex are not new to our world and neither is homosexuality. Extramarital affairs are nothing new either. When exactly is it do think this change happened? When, in history, can you actually point back to a time when any of that wasn't going on? But perhaps you also think that women should get their asses back in the kitchen and stop speaking up when the "man" of the house dare lay a finger on her in anger. That way you don't have to know about it ... that way you can convince yourself that it's not actually happening and that the great myth of the family value has been restored.

I would like to suggest to Casandra that she read "The Way We Never Were" by sociologist Stephanie Coontz. Now THERE'S someone who knows her history and does her homework. She points out (and has the sources to back up her statements) that everything (EVERYTHING!) you fret about in your post has pretty much always been going on in American society, and is a normal part of our brief history.

The greatest threat to American families currently is their economic devastation brought on by the collapsing temples of Reaganomics. The destruction of the middle class has gone hand in hand with the eradication of the manufacturing sector, weakening of organized labor, and a regulatory climate that invites corporations and financial institutions to privatize wealth and socialize risk. That's where we are in 2009 - not 1954, the year in which Cassandra is living.
