That video is great! It only helps push moderates away from the GOP. Keep hounding on the birth certificate republicans! Keep on it, and watch all the normal people in the country run away from you as fast as they can.

Re the video:

I feel really sorry for Rep. Pence. Can you imagine trying to have a forum on health care and needing to deal with that? And then needing to indulge this crazy lady on reciting the pledge of allegiance for some reason? It must feel like babysitting retarded adults.

Leave 'retarded adults' out of this. Stupidity, racism, and ignorance has nothing to do with being retarded.

Jimmy Carter leaving his church after 60 years because of sexism seems newsworthy too...

So the smoker appointed an obese person to be Surgeon General. Seems about par for the course. Next he'll name a tax evader as Secretary of the Treasury. Oh. He already did that.

"Real America" is going mad. To some extent it does feel like babysitting mentally deficient adults.
If the opposing nature of our governing ideologies were just a question of fiscal and/or social conservatism vs. liberalism, that would be fine -- a debate worth having to keep both sides in check; but it is really beginning to feel like a fight over keeping sane people in control of the country versus losing control to people who believe an eclipse is a dragon eating the sun. It's no longer just a question of feeling that if your side loses it will be a term of retrograde for your ideologies, it now feels like if you lose the country may actually cease to exist in the near future.

Henry Louis Gates was trying to break down the door to his house because he was locked out. A concerned neighbor called the police, and when they contacted Gates, he *REFUSED TO IDENTIFY HIMSELF* as the owner of the home or anybody at all.

This guy can cry racial discrimination all he wants, but he is completely in the wrong.

StillNon@18: Thanks for the Fox News interpretation. Every OTHER account claims that Gates identified himself as the owner of the home and showed the cop his Harvard ID.

Personally I would never show an ID to a cop who knocked on my door in the middle of the night demanding to know what I was doing in my own house. I'd likely call 911 instead.

@ 18, 19, you're both part right, part wrong. It occurred in the middle of the day; Gates did indeed first refuse to ID himself but eventually complied.

If the police report is accurate (and I'm kind of doubtful that the cop would fudge much, given that he knew he was dealing with a Harvard professor) it's clear that Gates was at fault.

19, YOU'RE the one inflating and dramatizing the issue in a way FOX would

"Personally I would never show an ID to a cop who knocked on my door [Gates wasn't inside, he was outside of a residence] in the middle of the night [it was broad daylight] demanding to know what I was doing [if you were trying to barge down a door though?] in my own house [again, he was not inside the house]."

So fuck right off, Doug.

i've been in situations like this, group meetings and community forums and such, with belligerent idiocy running rampant, there's really no way out. i feel bad for senator castle, but i guess he chose his party. if he wants to represent those kinds of people, thats his business.

I'm inclined to think the exact opposite. The cop thought he was just dealing with some uppity n*gger, then backtracked when he found out who Gates was. I don't believe one word in that report.

Keshmeshi, the professor yelled at the cop, among other things, "DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE DEALING WITH!?!"

Remove your racism-tinted glasses and look at this calmly. The officer approached a man who may have been breaking into a house. The man refused to identify himself as the owner of the home. Then went on to shout, scream, flip out, cry ZOMG racism, etc..

Black or white, this is a really dumb move and will get you in trouble. period.

His credentials worked in his favor, as all charges have been dropped.

This is what I heard from a reliable source: Gates and his wife are separated and she had changed the locks. He really did try to break in when he apparently did not have any business being there. (I'm imagining John Malkovich breaking back into his house in "Burn After Reading") Probably he was angry at the situation in general, and did, in fact, act an ass to the cops -- who, as usual, acted an ass right back. I'm sure racism did play some role in the escalation of events, but probably not the lead role.

StillNon@22: From CNN

"...The professor was inside for several minutes when a police officer, Sgt. James Crowley, appeared at his steps and asked him to step outside, the lawyer said.

"According to his lawyer, Gates told the officer he lived there and showed him his Massachusetts driver's license and Harvard University identification card. The officer followed him into his house and said he had received a report of a possible break-in, the lawyer said. Gates grew frustrated that the officer was continuing to question him in his home and asked for the officer's name and badge number, Ogletree said."

And keshmeshi@27 is correct. The police report is very likely a cover-your-ass job.

@28
StillNo you still don't get it. You are taking only the police report as fact. There is a good possibility that it is complete bullshit by someone trying to cover their ass. The Professor says he produced Id immediately when asked. His word is just as valid as that of the policeman. Until this is sorted out by the court system both are just possibles and not established fact. So when you make claims of the Professor saying "Do you know who I am." You are simply talking out of your ass because you were not there, so, there is no way for you to prove what you claim. Lets be honest here, basically you are an idiotic shit head that is taking one side as fact simply because there is talk of racism. Go look at yourself in a mirror and try to figure out what your motive for such a dick move could possibly be.

My dick move is challenging what you immediately succumb to, you jaggoff Senor Guy.

This professor was BEGGING for a reason to be the victim. Begggggggging.

YOU are the one who doesn't get it if you don't think an African American Scholar isn't going to be just a little trigger happy when it comes to being beat down by the man, having the opportunity to be right, and come out with worldwide press on the issue; as has happened.

You can't consider all angles because you have only one angle of sight. You want to attack me because I am throwing another angle your way? Well screw you if you can't handle that. Last time I checked, he is innocent until proven guilty but we are FREE to raise questions herein.

Let's be realistic. It's one thing if Gates were a nobody; it's another that he's a Harvard prof, even if the arresting officer didn't know he was a famous one. The cop knew it by the time he decided to arrest him. You don't want to fuck around with Harvard when they're your meal ticket.
