cac2/1248474207-tronlegacy.pngSlog tipper Brad sends along an e-mail containing a link to this preview of Tron Legacy, the sequel to 1982's Tron. The only text in the e-mail is the subject line, which reads "Dude..."

I'm with Brad
on this one.

Well given that we've already established that the Dude is not Iron Man, it's nice to see that he has gotten an upgrade, albeit in a different way.

A_squirrel, a continuation of the original story set years after the first one and starring the original actor is a sequel, not a remake.

And as for the CGI comment: Duuude, have you actually seen TRON???

Bad idea. The first TRON was great because it was at the birth of computer graphic use in movies. It was different and unusual and visually interesting. The story was ok, but not spectacular. It didn't matter though, because the whole thing looked so cool.

Now all that stuff is old hat. If the story of this new movie sucks, it won't matter how pretty it looks.

I'm pretty sure this exact same clip was shown last year at Comic Con, and the file is called something like "Concept Test" -- is this movie actually in production at all?

Seems strange to make a Tron sequel, considering the movie bombed for Disney in the 80s (though I was partly inspired in high school by it to want to be a computer graphics artist), but I guess studios are having bidding wars over movies about Facebook and the Viewmaster toy right now.

The Dude thing is pretty hilarious, though. Once you think about that, it makes the clip 30 times more fun.

Tron 2.0 was a 2003 PC game by the Monolith folks (I think using a later engine than the original Lithtech). It featured computer graphics that were more complex than those in the original movie (and then rendered in realtime!) and updated the lightcycles game (though not to the degree that is seen in this video) to be more involved than Surround or Serpents with the ability to adjust speed.

It'll be interesting to see if the new film acknowledges the events in Tron 2.0, and if they follow in the footsteps of the original film and add new techniques to the vast library of CGI devices used in film today.

That said, Dude!
