If Gates were a tenth as smart as he thinks he is he could have resolved this situation.

He is an arrogant asshole who thinks he is above the law.

The police should have given him a beatdown.

Gordon is clearly unencumbered by the thought process. Does he sound like he would believe any document or witness that could be produced? I don't think so. The attack on Obama is an end in itself. Facts are irrelevant.

I'm assuming Gordon Liddy is trying to drum up ratings for his terrible radio show, because that was a pretty sad showing even from a wingnut like him.

Also, don't the words "birth certificate" and "certificate of live birth" mean EXACTLY THE SAME THING?

All reportage of the Crowley-Gates incident is lacking because the full details are not given before the writers and commenters jump in with their conclusions.

That said, based on Crowley's report, he's in the wrong, because apparently he was LEAVING -- that is, he'd satisfied himself there was no crime in progress -- and he arrested Gates simply for yelling at Crowley and walking after him which Gates had a perfect right to do.

Walk Kowalski would have done no less. And it doesn't matter if Gates was rude, or "our of line" or angry or yelling you have a right to be that way and the cop here arrested him for being uppity. When he wouldn't have done so had he been an angry white guy.

Here's the cops' report as written up by the link:"“He was arrested after following me outside the house,” Sergeant Crowley said on the radio, “continuing the tirade even after being warned multiple times — probably a few more times than the average person would have gotten. He was cautioned in the house, ‘Calm down, lower your voice.’ ” He added, “The professor at any point in time could have resolved the issue by quieting down and/or by going back in the house.”"

In ohter words at this point in time Crowley knew Gates wasn't a burglar and had no probable cause to arrest him for anything; Crowley was upset because someone was yelling at him; Crowley had no right to have Gates quiet down or go back into the house and Crowley could have just walked away.

It's surreal to see Liddy, a convicted felon, questioning the legality of anything.

What was with Matthews claiming Liddy was "a dear friend"? Man, is Matthews creepy. MSNBC gets more disturbing by the day.

Liddy must be on some heavy soporifics. He was incoherently childish, demanding something akin to three-dimensional proof that Obama was born at all. How Matthews or anyone else takes Liddy seriously casts aspersions on their own judgment.

Mr. Dwek ...[told] money laundering targets, who included three rabbis in Brooklyn and two in New Jersey, that he was bankrupt and trying to conceal his assets ... The targets, in turn, accepted bank checks Mr. Dwek made out to charities that they oversaw, deducted a fee, and returned the rest to him in cash.

New Jersey sting or Nigerian email scam???

Liddy's entire career has been based on criminality. Kids today probably don't even know he was a Watergate burglar. And his radio career has been highlighted by gems like the time he recommended shooting federal agents -- any federal agents, maybe even mail carriers? -- in the head. "Head shots". How a man like that can get on TV in 2009 is a mystery to me. Would they bring on David Duke too?

Christ, it's no wonder that Liddy got caught. When did he get wacked on the head with the Stupid Shovel? In prison?

I say we should legislate mandatory, immediate euthanization of any person still alive who was affiliated with the Nixon Administration. Some of these dinosaurs just need to go away already.

I'm with Fnarf: Why is Liddy now a "pundit," expert, or whatever he claims to be? The only time he should ever be on TV is on the History channel. Liddy is still a criminal and clearly a lunatic.

I often find CM too annoying to watch but this time his yammering insistence was spot on.

@15,

I'd be happy to see him on Court TV, as a defendant.

Didn't Liddy once hold his hand over a flame to impress a girlfriend's father? Our geology professor told us that and then used it to explain the Hawaiian islands. "Imagine if G. Gordon Liddy had moved his hand over the candle flame very slowly..."

Why does a Watergate burglar have a career?

Liddy's appearance on Hardball was one the most bizarre TV moments I've seen in a long time.

I absolutely love this whole citizenship "debate." Can the Republican party self-destruct any further? And - what - 9 of their congressmen signing onto a bill to require proof of citizenship to run for president? Totally, totally awesome.

The German conservative party has been playing the racism card and the obstructionist card for a long time. It's worked for them. Roland Koch, ladies and gentlemen.

Time has not been kind to Mr. Liddy. He used to be the fucking bogeyman, and now he's a doddering joke.

Sad, in a distinctly "pity-not-really-sadness" kind of way.
