Piping Hot Cup of Joe Mallahan

Posted by on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Mallahan's new ad for mayor:

Wow. So much Joe. So much caffeine. So little T-Mobile (unlike this ad). And prepare to see more of it: As of Mallahan's last disclosure filing with the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission, Mallhan had $253,845 on hand. If he's smart, he'll spend it all in the next three weeks to pull his polling numbers out of the gutter (only eight percent as of two weeks ago).

I love how political ads always have to show them with their wife and kids. Look at me! I have a family! You can trust me!

The last shot of that ad made me realize he and McGinn could put on a hell of a belly-flop contest.

Nice job of name recognition - the gimmicky "not THAT joe!" at the start has awesome potential to stick in voter's heads when staring at a ballot... "joe... joe... I remember something about that joe?"

Lame and Lamer. To quote our "Friends of Seattle," - "Mr. Mallahan's inexperience and his shallow understanding of city issues and politics make him the wrong person to address Seattle’s pressing needs...Mr. Mallahan’s uninspiring policy platform compounds our concern regarding his inexperience in the public realm; in fact, his policy analysis suggests an unfamiliarity with local policies and institutions." That and a lame ad, no thanks Joe.

Doesn't he have ANY minority friends he could've used to populate that last screen? He sure looks like the white candidate in the race.

I wish this guy would tell his campaign people to stop putting up his signs on public property. I'm sure they know that this is illegal, but seeing as nobody feels compelled to put up his signs (or those of any other candidate for that matter) in their yard, this is the only way to get some visibility. It's just comes across as tacky and desperate.

Please share with us the regulation or code concerning prohibition of political signs on public property.

@12 - the only place I know you definitely can't have political signs is within 400 feet of a public or private school - and that includes all of the U District from I-5 east up to at least 45th.

Yard sign regs are available on the city's website:
http://www.seattle.gov/ethics/elpub/Yard…

In Seattle, political yard signs are governed by Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) 23.55, which regulates all temporary signs in the City. Seattle Elections Code regulations no longer require sponsor identification on yard signs. Follow the links at Law & Filer Info on the www.seattle.gov/elections website to find information about sponsor identification requirements on other campaign advertisements in SMC 2.04.290 and SEEC Rule 9.

YARD SIGNS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY
Regulations regarding campaign signs on private property are administered by the Seattle Department of Planning and Development, 206-684-8419.
Yard signs may be placed on private property or on planting strips abutting private property, with the consent of the property occupant. Such signs may be in place at all times.

SINGLE FAMILY ZONES
In single family zones, signs may be no larger than eight (8) square feet and may not exceed eight (8) square feet total signage per single family residential lot. If the signs are 18” x 24”, two signs could be placed on one residential lot, if the signs are 2’ x 3’, only one sign could be placed on each residential lot.

OTHER ZONES
In zones other than single family residential, the maximum size of signs is twenty-four (24) square feet, and the total amount of signage may not exceed twenty-four (24) square feet per lot, except that each dwelling unit may have eight (8) square feet for the use of that occupant, which may cause the total amount of signage to increase to more than twenty-four (24) square feet when there are more than three (3) dwelling units.

ALL ZONES
In all zones, for four fourteen-day periods, temporary signs may cover up to thirty-two (32) square feet per lot. That could be the equivalent of ten yard signs that are 18” x 24” in place for a two month period. If the signs are of non-rigid material (e.g., banners) they may cover up to thirty-six (36) square feet, but the total signage may not exceed one-hundred (100) square feet per lot.

YARD SIGNS PROHIBITED ON PUBLIC PROPERTY
The law prohibits placement of campaign signs on all public property, including but not limited to: medians, boulevards, parks or public golf courses, greenbelts, rights of way to arterials or freeways, bridges or overpasses or planting strips that abut public property, such as schools, public buildings, parks or public golf courses.
COMPLAINTS about signs on public property or the planting strip adjacent to public property should be directed to the City agency responsible for that property, e.g. the Library, or Parks & Recreation Department, or other appropriate agency.
COMPLAINTS about signs in a public right of way should be directed to the Seattle Department of Transportation at (206) 684-5267 or by email at annualpermits@seattle.gov .

Someone needs to tell that man that being an Obama delegate does not qualify him as a "community organizer". For that matter, being a competent manager qualifies him to... continue being a manager. Not a mayor. Thumbs down, Joe.

Citizen R:
Silly! If you'll look closely, in the very last shot there is one person who is not white in the crowd. To the left hand side. I promise, they're there!

I didn't like the ad at all (I like the one you link to way more), but I like Joe. I think someone with corporate management experience could be what Seattle needs.

I have had the displeasure of working with Joe, and this man is not someone worth voting vote.

This guy is a nightmare. He is a mid manager bully and ill mannered. He has ran a negative campaign because, well, he is a negative person.

His claims to be a "community organizer", without ever working in a community center in any capacity tells you he will stretch the truth to his ends without thinking twice.

And the damned commercial...what the hell does being a "soccer coach, husband, and father" have to do with running a city?

People, this is not the man to be an improvement over our current major.

Is "Jbub" seriously runnig?

He does not have any experience, was forced out of his strategy job for incompetence, has a history of bad decisions (the acclaimed TMO product FLexpay was a dismal failure and caused TMO to outsource thousands of jobs overseas while US workers go hungry), and is demeaning to everyone he feels is beneath him (which is everyone).

Maybe this is a T-Mobile marketing campaign since each time Mallahan is mentioned so are they. When you are 4th in wireless you are willing to do anything.
