Marine Corps May Ban Pitbulls on Bases

Posted by on Mon, Aug 3, 2009 at 12:33 PM

The latest battleground in the war on monster dogs: military bases.

A new Corpswide proposal calls for banning specific dogs and mixes of those breeds from all Marine bases as soon as September.

The draft order, which would be included in the Marine Corps Housing Management Manual, prohibits pit bulls, Rottweilers, canid/wolf hybrids and mixes of those dogs from being on “any Marine Corps installation, at any time.” The only exception would be trips directly to and from a base veterinary office, “with no other stops aboard the installation authorized.”

“The rise in ownership of large dog breeds with a predisposition toward aggressive or dangerous behavior, coupled with the increased risk of tragic incidents involving these dogs, necessitates a uniform policy to provide for the health, safety and tranquility of all residents of family housing areas,” the draft order states.

Base residents who do not comply with the policy may be evicted, according to the proposal.

In Seattle, breed ban advocates have met with city council member Tom Rasmussen about banning potentially dangerous breeds from city parks, but discussions haven't progressed any further.

How about having a dog license meaning something other than you have a dog? How about having to prove your dog knows basic comands, is unagressive in all situations and has proper leash skills? If the dog doesn't pass certain skills you have to show proof the animal is enrolled in a training program and you try again in say 3-6 months, that way agressive dogs are at least documented and tracked. Owners as well.

This should include mandatory microchipping of all domestic animals as well. They are NOT children...no matter how much some people want them to be.

But how do they tell the difference between the overly-aggressive, violent, attack-crazed dogs and the Marines? It seems to me that could get pretty tricky.

Muggims, I think you are going the wrong way on that one. Children should be chipped as well. Once they are adults the chip can be removed.

@6:

Actually, it's pretty easy - the dogs have better haircuts.

@7, frankly people should take a basic IQ test to even reproduce. Though that would effectively destroy the future of the Republican Party but what can you do?

Any self-respecting Marine would have a bulldog, anyways.

Banning certain breeds from City parks? What lucky agency would get to enforce that? SPD? I bet they're ecstatic about that. People are getting shot and murdered across the city but they have to respond to hysterical 911 calls about "pit bull sightings".

Our military is losing its macho points, at this rate soon we're gonna have to start recruiting homos to butch up the place.

They can keep talking...It is already in the law that this CAN'T happen.

Sure...laws can change..but it is highly improbable.
So, Let Colleen Lynn, Ellen Taft, The Holden's and the other Hate Mongers keep on yammering.

Meanwhile, groups like FABB are actually making changes that help reduce dog bites and keep doggies safe from unfair laws by doing things like like:

Working with King County to draft a Dangerous Dog Law
Changing Denver's Law so Pit bulls are no longer killed
Working with SeaTac to Implement Free Dog Owner Workhops
Working Towards Felon Restrictions (for certain types of felons)on Dog Ownership
Holding Free Pit bull Owner Workshops in Seattle
Helping low income peeps spay/ neuter their pups

Ummmmm, #11/#13: King County already has a breed ban in place for wolf hybrids (one of the three breeds mentioned in this post). Wolf hybrids became popular in the 80's and the county responded by passing a breed ban. The same thing can easily be done today with pit bulls and rottweilers.

Obviously, if they want to get rid of pit bulls on Marine bases, they should fine them 20 cents per pit bull, since banning would be way too practical.

Unless they're service dogs, an example being plastic bag recycling pit bulls, or even pit bulls that attack people who smoke in public parks.

@15..Nope.
Thanks to The wonderful, compassionate Seattle City Council Member and soon to be Mayor...Jan Drago...Nuh Uh.
She created and passed a law that makes it so you can't ban dogs based on breed.

What's the deal with these posts? Does Dan Savage only hire people who hate pit bulls? It's unfortunate that someone who works so hard to fight discrimination in some areas is such a bigot in others.

Military families apparently do not have enough to contend with with deployments,crappy housing,etc. now you can't own the dog you want.Oh wait, that's right the military is supposed to fight for the freedom of others, not their own freedom!DUH!

Don't like it? Don't join the military. Or were you too fucking stupid to figure that out when you enlisted?
