Web Addict

Posted by on Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 9:50 AM

Back in July, the Chinese Ministry of Health declared that electroshock therapy was not an acceptable treatment for people addicted to the internet—so employees at the Qihang Salvation Training Camp in Nanning beat a 15-year-old web addict to death instead.

Or so authorities claim.

Instead of electroshocks, they should punish web addicts by forcing them to read SLOG comments all day long.

I'm thinking the comments here are going to be about 70% snide and sarcastic and 30% sincere, and that makes me kind of sad because I'm really, actually horrified by the shitty life this kid must have led before being murdered by people that were supposed to help him.

Wouldn't want them to learn to read and write, would we.

They might question state funded health care and light rail.

Messy problem for any Centralized Communist state...

@5 - Believe it or not, these clinics are not state-funded or state-supported. They're a product of good 'ol capitalism. Basically, these private, for-profit clinics have been advertising like crazy to parents, capitalizing on their fear of their child not being "normal."

What is it with people freaking out about their teenagers and packing them off to places where they're abused and sometimes murdered? Sadly, this shit has been going on in our own country for a generation.

It's fucking heartbreaking.

I feel awful about the kid and the numerous others that are probably being beaten right now, but just haven't died yet.

That being said, I figured Charles would've slogged this one.
