If the world has to have an oh-my-god-I'm-gonna-pee-my-pants-terrifying 140 lb. GIANT RAT in it, hey, at least he's polite...

I've never understood other peoples' fear of rats. I'd totally have this fella as a pet.

i would love it if we had 140lb rats, but capybaras are giant guinea pigs. and they're darling, even when they're not politely eating popsicles.

@1 Fear of rats is easily justified by histories of plague.

In the rats' defense, however, the fleas were the real culprits. They TOTALLY framed the rats and got away with it.

This guy is totally adorable.

Nutria on the other hand, are the vilest things ever to walk the face of the earth. One was sitting on the bench outside my apartment the other day when I got home from work. Scared me half to death. So much for building maintenance's theory that keeping a few of the feral cats around the building would keep the rodent population down. Of course, nutria weigh the same as your average cat...

Capybaras aren't giant rats, they're giant hamsters. C'mon, now. I've seen them at two different zoos and was enthralled. Enthralled, I tell you. They're the world's greatest animal, and all haters need to step off.

Capybaras are indeed giant, long legged guinea pigs and obviously make good pets. Raise a nutria in captivity and raise it well with love and respect, and I'm sure it'd make a good pet too. Just like the normal, maze running, 1 pound Norway rat.

I'll never understand you normal people and your hate/fear of rats, bats, spiders, and cats combined with your exultation of up to 200# retarded wolves. Horrible, drooly, noisy, obsequious, shit-eating filth-loving house monsters the lot of them.

Guess it takes all kinds.

Capybaras are cute!

Don't call them rats (besides, Rats are pretty cute, and fairly smart animals as well)

I saw my first rat in Seattle a couple of nights ago. I scared the bejesus out of it because it wasn't expecting a human to be sitting on top of its hiding place. Capybaras are rodents but they don't look like rats. It looks more like a giant version of a mountain beaver which I've also seen in Seattle. They make cute sounds when scared. Hmm...it sounds like I go around scaring rodents all night.
