Upon seeing this sign on a building on the corner of James and 9th...

...I think: What is no more? The subject. What is vanishing? The citizen. What is emerging? The inhabitant. What group best expresses American resistance to this transition? The Birthers. The subject? Rural. The citizen? The nation state. The inhabitant? A planet of cities.

I hate this sign. The other day I was driving by it and my partner looked at it and said, "But I don't."

You can tell it's Hempfest weekend...Mudede's posts are getting increasingly erratic.

(yes, I know, he doesn't smoke pot. whatever.)

That's funny; when I see that sign I think "yeah, that really isn't any cleverer than it was the first time I saw it 30 years ago, or any of the dozens of times I've seen it since".

It's an advertisement, Charles. For people who commute. Not a code. Semiotics isn't everything.

Charles, since this post and the one about the M Street Market indicate you pass through the neighborhood on a somewhat-regular basis, you should go to Harborview sometime. Check out the art, wander down to the cafeteria, examine the graffiti. I believe you would find it to be rich grounds for philosophizing.

when this went up i thought it was bizarre, but thought provoking, sort of like the line "wherever you go, there you are"
my friend's apartment complex has a sign up the says in huge letters "OUR SPECIAL IS YOU!"

But it begs the question, how can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?

That sign was a line on a Firesign Theater album; "Bozos," I think.

The poster? Charles Mudede. The writing? Inscrutible. The meaning? Lost to the ages, like the childhood of an angry butterfly. The answers? Unrelated to the questions. What do I mean? Uneaten blueberry muffin.

I see that sign on complexes around town and always think the same thing: "Yeah, and I'd probably be starving because I'd pay an assload of money in monthly rent."

Yep, I've become a mere inhabitant of my city. Trying to tune out what goes on here. I'm sticking with denial. Someday I'll live in a better place, with ice cream and puppy dogs and fewer racists...

Teabirthers are resisting, but are they citizens?

They're getting involved and making their voices heard. That's a plus.

Minuses:

Their demands are that nobody make any more demands upon them. Lewis Lapham said it a few years ago: Treating their nation like a luxury hotel with service that needs improving, a mentality of customers, not citizens.

Also, not so informed, not so read-y. Call me an 18th century snob. Reading beats grapevine. Not that they didn't have ignorance and rumors back then, but... yeesh. You'd think we'd be doing better by now... bah.
