Susan Hutchison didn't spend long basking in her win tonight before unveiling her attack on her likely opponent, Dow Constatine.
She cast the election as being about change—where have we heard that before?—saying: “Everywhere we go across the county, everyone wants change, and now the voters have a choice. They’re going to be able to choose between the old way and the new way.”
The old way? Bought elections, politicians in the pocket of special interests, and “an arrogant county leadership that’s lost touch with the people.”
Hutchison promised to instead fight for citizens—"not against them"—and bring about “a county that is open for business again and ready to get us moving again.”
The call-and-response portion of her speech hit the same themes, but fizzled out by the third call.
“Can we trust our future to the same politician who helped create the mess we’re in?” she asked, suggesting she's going to run as if Constantine, a member of the County Council, is just finishing up his fifth term as County Executive.
"No!" screamed the crowd.
“De we need a new kind of leadership?” she asked.
"Yes!" screamed the crowd.
“Working together,” she said.
Mumbles.
The crowd seemed to be thinking: "Wait. Was that a question? And, Susan, we're Republicans. We don't really want to work together with anyone. So what the fuck do we say to that?"
