I've been to all those "real american places" except Lookout Mountain, and they're all crapholes whose claim to fame is usually a one day event.
Maybe the article was written for city folks who are so self-important that, in order to feel like they are visiting "real america", they go to the Indy 500 or watch retirees fly balloons in Albuquerque.

Re: the True America story: "In an increasingly techno-world, there are still places and events that remain rooted in the heart and soul of the American past." As it to suggest everything else isn't "rooted in the past"?
What about going to the library? Libraries are new, they're not rooted in the past, we just sort of came up with them in the last fifteen years. Cool things, you all should take a look at one sometime.
What about watching a Sounders/Seahawks (pick your sport if you care that much) game? Is that rooted in the past? Is there any historical precedent behind these peculiar... ball games being played in that weird bowl-shaped structure, or is it a recent innovation?
Maybe crap like that doesn't count because it's not ritualistic enough. Sports games and library visits happen too frequently. We need stuff like the Tournament of Roses and Groundhog Day, which only happen once a year, so that makes them more authentic expressions of culture, apparently.
Maybe instead of indulging my baser instincts by watching a movie with lots of cars and boobs and explosions, I should watch the Indianapolis 500 and the Miss America Pageant. Between the two of them, they have lots of cars and boobs- and even explosions from time to time!- but they're much more Americanny than Michael Bay's latest shitty reel, by virtue of their... uh... Americanism.

"Real America" isn't secret right-wing code for "White America". When Sarah Palin made her infamous comments about "Real Americans" everyone in her audience knew exactly who she was talking about.

I live in Real America. It's not a place, it's a state of mind (though I drove past Lookout Mountain on the way home from the Spyderco knives corporate headquarters today if that counts). Real America is a place where people own (and carry, and use) guns, own and carry knives (I never leave home without one), and when the government says "Let's raise taxes on tobacco," we say "fuck that shit" and plant our own.

@2 is right, @9 is wrong, and Real America was the 43rd Dist Dems BBQ today where Susan Hutchinson, our local Sarah Palin clone, showed up to give a speech on why we should vote for her.

To be fair, the article does say "places to find true Americana" (hence the rooted-in-the-American-past thing). It must have rocked to be white in the 1950's. Oh yeah, and male too.

In terms of population density, the New York City really does stand alone.
Washington State for instance, has no places with a pop density greater than 10,000 people per square mile. In New York State there are 23, with NYC having 26,402.
What that means, is the super high density "urb", although many people live there, is far from the norm when it comes to all areas of the United States.

@10 Funny how some misguided souls fetishize guns and knives and can talk of nothing else. I too own guns and knives but I haven't turned them into a religion; they're just tools and I would no more worship them than I would a crescent wrench. As far as tabacco goes, well, it's just the legal drug of choice for addictive personalities. Whenever I see a smoker I think to myself "Orally fixated weakling." Man up and kick that addiction!
