On this video, if you listen carefully when the full hearing begins to play, you can hear Isaiah M. Kalebu's defense attorney saying, "Rachel's here."

She's talking about Kalebu's aunt, Rachel Kalebu, who came to court on August 6, 2008, to see her nephew finally declared competent and to promise Judge Brian Gain that if he released Isaiah Kalebu on his own personal recognizance, she would look after him and make sure he took his medication.

Kalebu was eventually released. Within a year Rachel Kalebu, 61, was dead, killed in a suspicious arson in the apartment she had been sharing with her nephew. Shortly before the arson, Rachel Kalebu filed for a restraining order against Isaiah Kalebu, saying he was threatening her with physical violence and making her life "like living in hell." Isaiah Kalebu was questioned and released as part of the arson investigation. However, he's still considered a "person of interest" in the case.

Next: Guilty and not guilty.
