We maybe the first humans, but much of the world still hates our guts:
(BBC) Nearly 60% of black and African people living in Russia's capital Moscow have been physically assaulted in racially motivated attacks, says a new study.Africans working or studying in the city live in constant fear of attack, according to the report by the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy.
A quarter of 200 people surveyed said they had been assaulted more than once. Some 80% had been verbally abused.
But the number of assaults was down from the MPC's last survey in 2002.
The report's clear conclusion was that Africans living in Russia exist in a state of virtual siege, says the BBC's Rupert Wingfield Hayes in Moscow.
Remember 1988?
On December 24, 1988 two male African students were entering their campus at Hehai University in Nanjing with two Chinese women. The occasion was a Christmas Eve party. A quarrel about correct identification between one of the Africans and a Chinese security guard, who had ordered the Africans to register their guests, led to a brawl between the African and Chinese students on the campus which lasted till the morning, leaving 13 students injured. 300 Chinese students, spurred by false rumors that a Chinese man had been killed by the Africans, broke into and set about destroying the the African's dormitories, shouting slogans such as "Kill the black devils!" After the police had dispersed the Chinese students, many Africans fled to the railway station in order to gain safety at various African embassies in Beijing. The authorities prevented the Africans from boarding the trains so as to question those involved in the brawl. Soon their numbers increased to 140, as other African and non-African foreign students, fearing violence, arrived at the station asking to be allowed to go to Beijing.

As we all share common ancestors, I think it's ridiculous to say "you" are the "first humans". What a racist thing to say.

Many people who are minorities in a country can find themselves unfairly the targets of abuse. But that doesn't mean the world hates anyone. I think it's more a case of the ignorance of some and people hate what they fear or don't understand. You can see cases of African against African in some black countries. It's more a case of human nature.

Yup, the Africans sure have it bad. Much worse than the gays. In how many countries can you be executed for being black?

Question for you, Charles... Maybe where I live is kinda sucky in acceptance issues (see: East Europeans v Blacks), but have you encountered any issues with black Americans taking issue with black Africans? I've seen it here in Chicago.

That's precisely why political or religious divisions such as Ethiopian Jews, Muslim Senegalese, East African vs West African, Central African vs South African, African American vs African vs Afrolatino vs Afro Caribbean or any other you can come up with prove to be meaningless in the end, cause we might not see ourselves as family but to those who don't share our ancestry we are and they'll let us know whether its thru discrimination or as the examples you provided violence. So why should we continue to entertain more divisions amongst ourselves when those that hate us see us as one and benefit from those divisions? Look at how the Chinese are profiting in African nations now. United we stand, divided......

Yeah we know how much Africans are hated, just ask the Tutsi and the Hutu, or the Kikuyu and the Luwoh of Kenya. I suppose you could also ask Africans by taking a time machine back to Ghana and asking the African Slave traders that marched fellow Africans to the coast to sell them to any buyer. But one does not need to go too far back in time to see the hatred of the Black African. Nigeria is a good modern example. Of course we can all pick our favorite time, our favorite place and find some group beating the hell out of some other group. People, particularly heterosexual males, just love a good ugly fight.

I would say that people hate those that are different from themselves. So yes, black Africans are hated when they are in China and Russia, places that are highly xenophobic to begin with.

I've talk to many brothers and sisters from the Caribbean and they have let me known how there attitude and way of thinking has changed once they have immigrated to the US or the UK. It's easy to fall into the divisiveness trap and see yourself as better than other brothers and sisters because of whatever cultural bias has been indoctrinated in you but once you face those who have been in part guilty of tryin to put on your people that type of mentality and you see that Jamaicans and Barbadians are just labels that you choose to give more importance than to your shared ancestry once you see that Zimbabweans and Bahamians might find themselves under attack on a college campus in Russia or China not because of their nationality but because of their race, then it becomes self evident, then enlightenment starts to take place. Its sad that incidents like these need to place before we as a people come to realize this.

Yeah, those accounts are disturbing all right. I vividly recall living in Africa when those attacks occurred in China on the African students. There was much coverage of it both in words and photography. I think I recall a video of the melee at the train station. It was and remains both ghastly and unfortunate.

Last time I checked you & I are human brethren part of the same family of man that evolved from an area in Africa (Olduvai Gorge). Hate and its horrid manifestations, in any guise is equally terrible. To continue to promulgate that one particular hate (skin color or other salient feature) is worse (in any capacity including that hate's longevity) hides equally compelling hatred inducing fratricidal violence like Hutu vs. Tutsi or Crip vs. Blood etc. Your examples show "Mob Mentality". Another example is the white truck driver, Reginald Denny attacked and beaten by blacks in the wake of the Rodney King verdict in (1994?).

@9: Russians and Ukrainians are CRAZY racist (and homophobic!), in ways that aren't even funny. I'm guessing that if you know Russian really, really well, Russian media coverage of Obama would be a very interesting thing to study.
We may get fixated on our notions of active and passive racism in this country, but to tell you the truth, it's far, far worse outside of Canada and the United States. When you have entire countries with a national history and culture characterized specifically by their ethnicity, it's a hard thing to incorporate folks that are quite different from you.
But Charles, if you say that Africans are the "first humans", what does that really imply? Are you internalizing hate towards Africans by stating that the rest of the world has moved on while Africans remain as they were thousands or millions of years ago? Are they "yesterday's model"? Or are you asserting that Africans are first and best because they simply have the most experience as an ethnic group than others? If we order things as opposed to categorizing them, we're admitting that one group possesses more of some latent factor than another, but as someone suggested above, we are all related. All of us have roughly the same number of ancestors whether African or Caucasian or Asian or whatever, meaning that we're all pretty much in the same place in line, and none of us are really "first".

true dat charles. the majority of these posts prove your point. as one who has traveled eastern europe in my brown skin, i can say russia might be bad, but rumania is ten thousand times worse.
ive said this before, but as immigrants and men and women of color, the US might have its problems but it is ten thousand times better than any european country when it comes to the treatment of its racial minorities.

@25: Just ask any immigrant to Switzerland, where at one point in some cantons your application had to come up for a local vote, and could actually be denied by your neighbors. My guess is that Slavic, African and Middle Eastern names weren't an advantage in that process.

Everytime I happen to see a post from Charles about race the majority of the comments are off the chain (and no, that's not good). Though we may not always agree with what's said, I think it would be far more valuable to actually *try* to engage with some of the topics that he's addressing. And, frankly, Mudede's posts are mild compared to what a lot of non-whites in this country and in this city are feeling. It just really depresses me to see the comment thread degenerate like this every single time race is brought up, and it says a lot about why people of color in Seattle only choose to talk about these types of things amongst each other.

I know this is wrong, but watching that midget in the black t-shirt confront that super built guy was mildly entertaining, knowing that the only reason he was talking shit was due to the fact he was at a table with six other massive dudes with him.
But back to the topic, yeah the world is filled with a lot of hate. Racial hate, homo hate, women hate, child hate, elder hate. It all stems from the same place, ego and pride. Guess it boils down to survival instincts at its most primal level, and certain types of people are obviously not that evolved on the human scale yet.
