Never Forget

Crazy About Swayze, the magnificently well-timed celebration-turned-memorial for the freshly deceased film icon, tonight at Central Cinema, where the evening will commence with a candlelight farewell singalong. I cannot wait.

Previous coverage here, advance tickets recommended, as Central Cinema isn't huge and Patrick Swayze is. (Was. Sob.)

Extra bonus: By some miracle of fate, I will be seeing Dirty Dancing for the first time tonight. I understand I am in for a treat. Again, I cannot wait.

I envy you, seeing it for the first time. You'll have to let us know what you think.

I hope you enjoy Dirty Dancing, David. It works on many levels and there is no need at all to bring irony to the table.

Wow, I've heard nothing except what a delightful piece of trash it is.

Yeah, but Jerry Orbach (also - but much more tragically - deceased)!

It may be a cheesy 80s movie, but it's also wonderful- I'd say it's on par with Breakfast Club. "trash" is the wrong word.

I don't enjoy chick flicks.

Jerry Orbach is the greatest American actor since Marlon Brando.

And yeah, even I don't think "trash" is the right word, and I'm the one who used it. I've actually just heard it described as a total B-movie that almost went straight-to-video, and the success of which surprised even its stars.

Whatever. Can't wait.

I am so happy for you! And I agree with those who suggest you don't need to bring irony. The irony is in the thing itself, so spare your reserves.

Dirty Dancing has no real redeeming value other than the chemistry between Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The story is hackneyed, there's no plot at all, really, and the acting is terrible.

Despite that, it's fun watching Swayze and Grey on screen together this way.

For some reason, we spent a week in chemistry class in high school watching Dirty Dancing.

In Patrick Swayze's heaven, there are no corners in which to put baby.

RIP

How is it possible that you've never seen Dirty Dancing?

I guess there are as many opinions about Dirty Dancing as there are people who saw it. IMHO it works on the same level as Saturday Night Fever. Both were your basic dance movies with a minimum of good acting.

I saw it when I was too young to understand the Jews in the Catskills thing, or the abortion thing. Was weird to see it again as an adult with new context for some of the things that happen. When I was 10, I was like, dancing! Pretty dress! Patrick Swayze's butt!

It's funny. I hated Dirty Dancing when it came out, partly because it was just everywhere. Then in my early 30s I watched it again (after thinking Swayze was awesome in Donnie Darko) and I fell in love with it. My first movie date with my fiancee was Dirty Dancing (actually, Breakin' 2, but DD was the first in a theatre), and the fact that she liked it in the same way I liked it (unironically, but acknowledging that it was flawed) is what convinced us both that we were made for each other.

Dirty Dancing is watchable as a dance movie, but don't try to make a MOVIE movie out of it. Swayze and Grey are both very competent in it. If you want Grade-A, this-sucks-and-I-love-it, so-bad-it's-good Cheese, the movie you want is Road House.

17: Oh yes. I've seen Dirty Dancing zero times, but I've seen Road House 1,300 times.
