Joe Mallahan, Idiot

Posted by on Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 2:57 PM

Headline or the day:

Joe Mallahan admits to 43rd district Dems he drives six blocks to work, loses endorsement

That headline from the Seattle Times is a little misleading. Mallahan didn't lose the 43rd District Dems' endorsement. Mike McGinn won it. And Mallahan wasn't denied the endorsement because the 43rd District Dems are a bunch of environazis who got in a snit about his commute. He lost it because Mike McGinn won it. And McGinn won it pretty handily. Go read the whole story. And, hey, Dom pretty much nailed it, huh?

I love how the media still doesn't know how to respectfully approach Mallahan's lack of tact.

it must be hard for joe mallahan to walk those six blocks to work with his foot constantly in his mouth

You heard it here - only people with landlines or who answer all unidentified phone calls on their cell phones count.

According to King 5, that is.

Six blocks is longer than it sounds particularly when your time is worth a lot. That would be like walking from Broadway to 5th Avenue. It can be done but when a company is paying you six or seven figures to take care of business every second it valuable. Seriously. Does the Governor take the bus to work or does the County Executive ride their bike to events around the region.

Did he really say this? Becuase isn't Mallahan's campaign office WAY MORE than six blocks from his house? Public records tell me it's more like two miles.

@7: I'm sure you've noticed by now that Mallahan has a poor relationship with truth-telling.

@dan - it was his endorsement to lose because Mallahan resides in the 43rd. He must have performed badly to have not gotten it.

@6. no, it's not that long. It's about a quarter mile, which takes, at an average walking speed of 2mph, less than ten minutes. And he's not talking about his job (he's on leave), he's talking about the commute to his campaign headquarters - a job no one's paying him anything for.

@8 but why would he lie in such a way as to make himself sound even worse?

They left out another one of his good lines. Directly to an older lady, "I'm a man of principle, and I know you are too."

I've worked in walking distance of my home a few times and I always figured I'd get frustrated by traffic even w/ the short commute. Walking I get to see the seasons change in people's gardens, listen to music, day dream, stretch my legs. Over the years I've invested in a 'I don't have a license' commuter wardrobe, so I'm ok with the weather.

McGinn has his wife drive him and his bike to interviews. Chubby admitted it himself in a recent interview.

No, Dan, that editorial by Dominic was still poorly written. I'd hoped you'd have figured out by now the difference between attracting comments through spectacle rather than force of argument.

McGinn was able to have more people who already support him show up, as would be expected of someone running an almost solely grassroots campaign, and at a meeting in one of the more reliably liberal district. The question remains why anyone thinks the amount of time a candidate spends on mass transit is a worthy factor for who should be mayor.

One thing I hate about Seattle. The white bread yuppies here are just as apathetic as everywhere else - but they know it's cool to be up on politics, so they read something reactionary in the Stranger and BINGO they have a cause. So you get what we have here which is the battle of two unqualified bozos, all the name of escaping the tyranny of the Nickles regime. Suddenly Nickles doesn't look that bad to me. Who fucking cares if Mallahan walks to work or not. Can we hear about some real issues??

I can't see how driving six blocks could possibly be faster than walking, unless you have a driver who can just drop you off.

@18: But no, it wasn't Mallahan's poor performance at the debate, his lack of substantial support, his lack of experience, his lack of civic involvement, his lack of tact, no-- McGinn just happened to have more supporters around.

Actually, that seems to be part of a pattern... interesting.

Also, to @20: Nickles? Really? If you're going to namedrop, get the name right.

Baconcat@22 (want to clarify here after three comments in a row), I'd say given the latest poll results, even if not entirely accurate with lack of cell phone polling, Mallahan does have support around the city. That you didn't see it at one meeting shouldn't lead you to bad conclusions.

Lee 26
@25: I think he has a lot of support, but it's lukewarm and not enough to give him any serious clout in city politics. He is the "safe" choice for a lot of people who are suspicious of McGinn's activism, but I seriously doubt that many people are really impressed with or enthusiastic about his candidacy.

Except for, perhaps, Joe Mallahan himself.

@25: Yeah, remember how the polls said Nickels would be squaring off against Drago and that McCain/Palin would waltz into the White House?

Mallahan is the next Dewey.

Really just Broadway to Melrose... you don't even get to cross I-5 for a six block hike.

@14, 15, 16, 17: McGinn was interviewed on KUOW prior to the primary and the first question Steve Sher asked him was "how did you get here today?" McGinn replied that his wife dropped him off, as it was on her way somewhere. The McGinn family of five has one vehicle, I believe.

@14: so McGinn carpools with his wife occasionally and otherwise rides. Good for him. Please tell me you are even greener, that you carpool three-way everyday in a VW that you fill up with your own hot air.

There was also Mallahan saying "I have the support of the 'insiders, if you will.' "

What a pompous jack@$$. So the insiders are supposed to make me vote for you, Mallahan, you who has skipped voting ten times since 2001?

I was at the endorsement meeting, and I thought the true WTF moment was when Mallahan stated he lasted used public transportation last summer after drinking too much in a bar.

Really, this guy is too much of an idiot with a big mouth to be voted into any public office.

OK. Let's just be very specific here. Yes, it is 2.0 miles. It could be counted as few as 23 blocks, if you counted the large blocks as 1 block and the entire bridge-span as one block.

Home: MALLAHAN, M JOSEPH, 3716 Densmore Ave N, Seattle, WA

Campaign Office: 2633 Eastlake Ave E, Seattle, WA 98102
