Poverty Safari

Posted by on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 11:50 PM

So ACORN is suing her ass...

Picture_5.png
...and her partner in crime, James O'Keefe.
BALTIMORE — Community activist group ACORN is suing the makers of a hidden-camera video that showed employees of its Baltimore office giving tax advice to a man posing as a pimp and a woman posing as a prostitute.

The liberal group contends that the audio portion of the video was obtained illegally because Maryland requires two-party consent to create sound recordings.

I side with ACORN. I will always side with ACORN. Why? Because we (people in my class and above it) demonize the poor far faster than we demonize the rich. And the poor have done far less damage to the world than the rich. Far, far less.

So, two things: The woman, Hannah Giles, who played the prostitute? This is her father. He is an absolute nutter, and apples never fall far from the tree (one of the greatest sayings of all time). Think about Hannah's performance as a prostitute and think about her father's book A Time to Clash...

It's a culture warmongering tome that promises Doug's take on everything from "radical homosexuals" and "stupid sluts" to "sexless wives" and "Rosie O'Donnell."

The second thing about this: While visiting a seaside Oregon town during one Halloween that happened many years ago, I noticed that many of the country teen girls had decided to look like prostitutes—net stockings (with rape-rips!), red lips, short skirts. Not a Barbie doll, not a princess, but a prostitute was the most popular costume with this class of bored teens. I do not separate their fascination with urban prostitution from Hannah's delicious performance. It was a role that certainly gave her immense pleasure. For a moment, she was on the OTHER side. If ACORN is suing her, great! She and her partner must pay big-time for their safari in the hood.

This is exactly the kid of logic that will land Democrats in the minority again in another couple of election cycles. The whole incident, every aspect of it, is rotten. Defend any party involved at your own risk.

Wow, no. Just really- no. However they obtained those sound recordings, they were obtained and they're here, and what happens in them is scary and wrong, no debate necessary. Acorn needs to be held accountable. The little prostitute and her pimp can get in trouble for their part, but Acorn can't run away from this. (#3 is spot on- you're not helping the us libs with logic like this.)

Amazing how that "sow division" and "distract them from real reform" strategy of the right wing works every time. Yeah dude, defending Acorn and having anice juicy lawsuit (with all its depositions, revelations, investigation into Acorn -- you do realize the defendants get discovery, too, don't you? -- and putting in issue Acorn's reputation and whether it was already shitty enough in the court of public opinion for them to suffer any damages -- wow that's brilliant. Let's keep stirring that shit stew pot, we'll certainly get to single payer that way.

Not.

I just sent Acorn $100 bucks. They do great work, and have done great work for decades. This whole thing is just a conservative smokescreen, designed to get stupid people worked up.

After all, from what I've seen of these tapes, the advice given is no different from what a sleazy tax attorney might tell you.

Siding with the poor, in this case, means siding against ACORN. A large community organization should be able to offer the poor better help than advice on committing tax fraud.

@4: just like the way the contents of mcdermott's illegally obtained recordings led to the GOP being held accountable?

oh that's right, only mcdermott paid a price. conservatives always skate when they violate the letter of the law.

there's nothing to collect from these kids, but ACORN must fight back.

@3, @4, I don't think everyone who is ok with liberals has to support them in all possible endeavors. And for 4, Debate is VERY necessary.

ACORN obviously needs help here, they need to up the training that these counselors receive and do a better job of helping people. (not to mention spotting fake pimps, I mean really they didnt see anything wrong with him?)

A lawsuit would be great for the Right- depositions and months of juicy revelations pushing anything else off the front page.

It has been amazing, and gratifying, to see how suddenly and quickly the evil enterprise crumbled to dust- a modern day Babylon.

It is testament to the strange magic of Obama, who truly is a Magic Negro- the catch is that his magic only works for the Right.

Republican Presidents and Congresses never laid a glove on Acorn but in an instant they are now vanished.

Since Obama came into office- starting with the miraculous surprise upset victory of Proposition 8 carried to victory by his most loyal voters and right up to this morning's headlines- the Right stumbles from victory to triumph to success.

Long Live the Obama!

Siding the poor? Maybe Charles thinks 14 year old Salvadoran prostitutes are rich, after all HE always tips them well.

I absolutely support ACORN as an organization. They do great work and have helped countless people. However, they really need to get their shit together on training people. They need to be more careful with their voter registration drives and clearly their tax advice division. This isn't a matter of rich against poor. This is a matter of a small handful of shitheads in ACORN who should have told these people they couldn't help them and when they said they were bringing in sex slaves they should have immediately called the cops. I don't think this is representative of the organization but they need to get their ship in order to prove it.

Well said Charles! If everyone abandons Acorn then everyone will abandon the next Glen Beck target too. Dems need to stop giving credibility to the crazies on the right!

Every now and again a Taco Bell employee gets caught on film jacking off in the sour cream and that particular Taco Bell gets hammered but not the entire fucking franchise.

Besides, like it or not, maybe prostitution should be legally regulated. I don’t like that idea and wish it would go away all together but since it won’t … maybe prostitutes should be encouraged to include themselves in society.

ACORN employees called the cops after the freaks left, which is the proper procedure when dealing with potentially criminal fuckheads.

Good Morning Charles,
I don't agree. ACORN lost big time. Everyone except you and their advocates is abandoning them (the IRS, Obama and Congress especially Barney Frank, who lambasted them yesterday). Cleary, all of ACORN's former supporters had more on them than just the video. It is a disaster for the organization. It has been mentioned on SLOG but one of the big strikes against them was poor vetting and training of employees. There is nary a doubt that Breibart, O'Keefe, FOX News scored a coup.

I would compare this to the McDermott tape. But back then everyone seemed only to center on the fact that the recording was illegal and no one paid any attention to the unethical stuff said on the tape.
Why is this different?

"Every now and again a Taco Bell employee gets caught on film jacking off in the sour cream"

well if they were caught on video doing it in 3 franchises in a row, they might have a problem.

"maybe prostitution should be legally regulated"

For 13 yr old Salvadoran girls? Charming.

Thank god Obama has tossed Acorn and the rest of the linnet left overboard and become the centrist I voted for.

There were no 13 year-old Salvedorean girls. I saw nothing on those video except for acouple of clowns being treated like a couple of clowns. They were also reported to the police. And in any case the actions of a few employees are no indicative of the entire operation.

" They were also reported to the police. And in any case the actions of a few employees are no indicative of the entire operation."

So reporting human traffickers and pimps is not indicative of how Acorn works?

FYI none of the 3 offices in the video clips called the cops. Nice try.

And we're shutting down the United States Marine Corps for their molestery incidents in Okinawa in the 90's? Oh wait, that was a few bad apples. Isolated incidents. Oh, and it was the 90's... Clinton's fault. (And they didn't even have a ticking time bomb pretext! For shame...)

This is so lame I don't know where to start. Corrupt rich people suck, therefore corrupt working people don't? How can you be 19 years old, yet you've been writing the same drivel for what, 10, 15 years?
