16,000 People Beg the Mayor of Mount Vernon to Reject Glenn Beck

Take it away, KING-5 News:

On Saturday native son Glenn Back will be handed a key to the city of Mount Vernon, but protesters are trying to stop a ceremony to honor such a controversial and conservative commentator. Some of them are even threatening a financial boycott of the city if the show goes on. Wednesday night, protesters handed over some 16,000 signatures at the city council meeting, urging the mayor to cancel the event....

For those who just woke from a coma, Glenn Beck is the Fox News host/rodeo clown perhaps who recently horrified millions by expressing his opinion that President Obama is a racist with a deep-seated hatred for white people. Now, despite the protestations of many, Mount Vernon Mayor Bud Norris is determined to proceed with the controversial key-bequeathing. Fun fact from KING:

The event will take place at McIntyre Hall. It was built, in part, with a $6 million donation from the McIntyre Family, which is known for years of philanthropy. But not even they have a key to the city.

For more on the humanity-incriminating success of Glenn Beck, here's a three-part profile of the man by Salon's Alexander Zaitchik. (Metafilter praises it, I cannot wait to read it all.)

And confidential to Slog's regular Glenn Beckwatcher Paul Constant: Now you know how it feels to be confronted by that sneering mug when you least expect it. Also, in close up, you'll notice Beck is almost indistinguishable from Rush Limbaugh.

Rodeo clowns perform an important (sometimes life saving) service. Glenn Beck would be more of a Mutton Bustin' clown.

I'm sure you know they've banned reporters from the event. So who you sending, Stranger?

"Mayor Bud Mayor" sounds like a Joseph Heller character.

Amidst a hail of controversy, Glenn Beck plans to arrive to Mount Vernon, WA to receive the key its city. In light of the event, Mayor Dan Pike in the neighboring city of Bellingham, WA has extended an offer to a more trusted source for news commentary: "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart. As recognition of Mr. Stewart's quest for truth in the guise of humor, we would be honored if he were to receive a key to the City of Subdued Excitement. The punch line is: Beck went to high school in Bellingham.

#2 -- according to today's Seattle Crimes, there will be five press passes for the event. The mayor has not decided how they will be distributed. How about a slime wrestling tourney? The prize: the chance to bathe in more slime!

Wow. Don't even try to make sense of the comments going on at the KING-5 link. I take it those folks must be Warshingtonians.

"The animosity between Beck and Kelly continued to deepen. When Beck and Hattrick produced a local version of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" for Halloween -- a recurring motif in Beck's life and career -- Kelly told a local reporter that the bit was a stupid rip-off of a syndicated gag. The slight outraged Beck, who got his revenge with what may rank as one of the cruelest bits in the history of morning radio. "A couple days after Kelly's wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, 'We hear you had a miscarriage,' " remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. "When Terry said, 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce [Kelly] apparently can't do anything right -- about he can't even have a baby.""

What does a "key to the city" even mean? Does it imbue some special privileges?

If they give Beck the key, it's time to change the lock.

I would totally boycott Mt. Vernon for this… that's assuming I actually ever went there in the first place.

walt in seattle says it just goes to show that even in the puget sound you can find 16,000 morons who don't believe in respecting differences of opinion. While the 16 thou and their fellow travlers are congratulating themselves on the superiority of their side, and continuing to play the fascist without the guts to admit to it, the radical middle Americans will continue to distance themselves from such folly. They will continue to seek a new place between the old worn out left and the recently reinvigorated old reactionary right. They will continue to comeback to the real American position. Oh how racist and hateful can they be, isn't that it? How dare Americans not crawl in a hole and just die foir embarasement over their past sins. Heads in the beach sand, they on the reminiscing left will fail to see the ney leftist critique from Europe, put so well By Bertram Levy.

They will rely on the old put down, the moral equvalency to silence dialogues.....

Long life to Glen. And may his detractors live long enough to eat thsie words and repent their blackhearted ways.

I bought a car in Mt. Vernon this summer. I wish I could un-buy it and buy it somewhere else. Be damned if I'll spend any more of my money there until that asshole is gone.
