Harry Potter and the Intolerant Morons

Posted by on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 12:14 PM

This bit of news is circling the book blogs, and it reminds me that I am so glad I do not live in the span of time from 2001 to 2008 anymore:

A memoir by George W Bush's former speechwriter claims that Bush administration officials objected to giving JK Rowling a presidential medal of freedom on the grounds that her Harry Potter books "encouraged witchcraft".

These people were in charge of the country. For eight years.

Bush knows his base, which objects to witchcraft and Harry Potter. I can't image that Bush himself gave a crap about witchcraft. To give some perspective, stories about witchcraft are almost never included in textbooks and other educational materials for the large public school market in this country because publishers avoid putting in anything that just might be objected to by some school adoption committee somewhere.

I believe you meant "were looting the country" not "in charge of the country".

Please correct your mistake, thanks.

Maybe we should work on promoting tolerance for the homeless of even for fat people.

In fairness, we'll never know how many incidents of Witchcraft these policies prevented.

Didn't those people get elected to a second term after the first four years? Why the hell did ANYONE think that was a good idea?

It stills feels like some bad dream, some lingering terror, bankrupting us and betraying all the good things about America. Obama is redemption.

I'm surprised they didn't burn any witches at the stake. Or did they? You know, it truly wouldn't surprise me if they roasted some secretary for knowing how to tell time.

@10,
The republicans don't burn witches anymore, instead, their new favorite pastime is bombing foreigners.

Like Obama is going to add JK fucking R-dogs to this list?

It's kind of gross to even think about; the Bush Administration should really be embarrassed that one of them suggested it in the first place.

Saying Harry Potter inspires witchcraft is like saying Star Wars encourages kids to build a deathstar and start blowing planets up.

Don't go counting your chickens, with this dem congress' performance on health care reform those folks will be back to running the country in no time. Mandates without a PO...that'll keep 'em in office.

I wonder how long until a twister picks up Bush's house and plops it down far far away in a land of Munchkins.

With pitchforks.

Bet he'll be wishing there was a good witch then ...

Even the Bushies called the fundies wingnuts while in the White House. They love to get their ignorant, uneducated base riled up into a frenzy with their religionist B.S. Bush even admitted to having heard God speak to him. He is a whackjob. Anyone who admits to hearing voices should be locked away in an lunatic asylum, not running the country.
