Lunchtime Quickie

Don't cops have better things to do than break kids arms "like twigs" because they're, OH MY GOD, skateboarding? This whole scene is modern day Over The Edge-ism. I really don't understand it.

So why is it that liberals are so outraged when someone accuses the police of misconduct here in Seattle?

And why are liberals so gung ho about building another fucking jail? 1 + 1 still equal 2, right? if cops can do whatever they want with no fear of repercussion, why aren't we questioning why people are locked up? it took fucking long enough for them to fire the guy who beat up the teenage girl... but you wouldn't know police brutality is an institutional problem by reading the Stranger or the corporate media... every incident is a "bad apple" story and not the normal practice of these bastards.

This cop (like all cops) created the conflict, then pretends he was just responding to abuse. I hate to reward these dicks, but man they need more vacation time. Cops are clearly incapable of self-restraint and maintaining composure, and they need to learn to chill out. I think those kids should have hit him over the head a few times with their boards and taken their friend back.

Then again, I pretty much can't stand skateboarders either, so hey if they keep eachother occupied....

Power trip, anyone?

It takes a really big dick to bully around a bunch of kids. What an impressive man he is.

That was in SF, and scenes like this are actually thankfully pretty rare around here, given you show a fair amount of respect to the officer. The kid escalated the situation in a variety of ways, but the cop should know better than to be phased by some brats mouth. He's undoubtedly a rookie.

All around stupidity, on everyone's part.

"The kid escalated the situation"
No, the cop sarcastically egged the kid on. Nobody wants to be treated like trash, and just because you've 'learned' to take shit from a cop doesn't mean that's a good thing.

Kids haven't had time to learn the etiquette with cops. (Eyes down, bashful, thankful, shoulders slumped, keep a low profile.) And good for them. May they never have to learn it. The kid called the cop out for being a dick. Sure, it's not 'smart,' but nor is any civil disobedience. What was smart was staying calm once the cop went dick. Let your friend record it, and just go along for the ride. Let the cop show his true colors.

Its actually nice to live in a city where there is real (not REAL real....just real) crime....I'm so sick of living in places where the craziest thing cops have to deal with is people speeding and children skateboarding.....it gets old fast and really where most people's disdain for police is rooted. If I lived in Seattle all my life I would think cops are fucking angels because they never would've bothered me.....but then again, I'm white middle class....sooooo yeahhhh

Well, I listened to the whole thing. Sorry, kids, I'm with the cop.
1) he came to warn them off. The young man in question chose to say the most disrespectful thing he could and if he had said it to grandma, a teacher, a principal, he would have been in trouble.
2) he could have said, "Quit resisting arrest or you'll regret it.". I think saying he'd break his arm worked.
3) Were the guys in question breaking the law? Yes. Were they defacing public property? Yes. What would you have the cop do? He tried to warn them off and they got all pissy just like teenaged skateboarders are prone to do.
4) Does the cop come off like a bully? Kind of but all cops do. It's someone telling you what to do: nobody likes that.

Do cops get out of line? Sure, and they need to be nailed every time. But this is not one of those times and I'll bet the charges were not dropped nor the cop cited for any misdeeds.

Our high school cost about $100M dollars. Every single railing has scrape marks that now will hole and get rust. The two cement stands at the front of the school that house the light fixtures donated by the Class of 1932 (yes, that old) have nicks from where skateboarders have decided to grind on them. That's your tax dollars. That's the school your kid may go to someday but by then, it will look like crap because oh, yeah, some smart-asses just want to have fun.

I'm just agog at the idea that it's fucking illegal to skateboard anywhere in the entire COUNTY of San Francisco...

@9,

"Illegal" does not mean "criminal."

A cop can only arrest when he has probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed. Infractions (i.e., jaywalking) are not crimes.

I doubt very much that San Francisco uses criminal statutes to prohibit skateboarding.

I have seen cops take down a drunk, raging dude beating on a woman who was holding an infant in her arms. Hero!

I have seen cops be raging dicks like this guy, where he handles it precisely wrong. Staying calm and treating that kid with some respect might have actually, um, EARNED that cop the respect he DEMANDED. Instead, he simply created yet another group of citizens who see cops as fucking retard power trip assholes. That view is not without some justification, my law enforcement friends. This video is evidence of the culture that pervades the police forces. Let's keep protecting those women and infants, but drop the bullying of kids on skateboards, m'kay?

I too am with that cop, I think those kids need a lesson in politeness, If I were that kid I could have easily gotten out of that entire situation, But I am a manipulative sociopath.
