Adorable Lesbians

Making the case to approve Referendum 71:

This is the first ad from Washington Families Standing Together, and it's pretty dang good. But it's way less hilarious than the commercial by the bigots at Protect Marriage Washington.

This is a great commercial make sure everyone you know sees it! The right is about to dump a whole lotta money in to Washington State. If you or someone you know can contribute $5,000 or more you have got to do it before the 12th. www.APPROVE71.org/donate

Doorbelling will begin the 16th.

Once you receive your ballot send it back ASAP then start asking your friends if they have sent in theirs. Remember only about 50% of voters in San Francisco voted in the last election. Traditionally off year elections bring low voter turnout with a high percentage of them being conservative voters. With so many important issues on the ballot this year (Dow Constantine, No on 1033, APPROVE 71) we need to make sure progressives are voting en mass.

Phone banking happening every night of the week from the downtown office and on Saturdays in Georgetown and around the state at various locations sign up here http://approvereferendum71.org/volunteer….

When we tell our stories we win.

oh my god and they are nurses too, and mothers and grandmothers. and they garden. They have beautiful skin. This is the shit God wants for people.

In the time these two have been together thousands of straight couples have been successfully married and lived fabulous lives together.

What in the hell is wrong with those fake-christian people who lie and deceive? I'm sending more $$$$ to the approve ref 71- forces.

Nice old ladies - does it convince? I wonder.

The inflamed slop of the other side stops people in their tracks ... thus more interest and push.

Do they look like they need protecting? Not at all.

At least they are real Lesbians leading real lives ... Charlene Strong's story is stronger, where is she?

I wish them well, joy and happiness, i'm going to leave it at that. But the more i see the desperate vicious and defamatory statements made by Holden the more i know that God will deliver us.

@4 Charlene is currently touring Eastern Washington speaking at old age homes, community centers etc.

The ERW education fund has also just released this ad http://equalrightswashington.org/amiprot… in various markets around the State. Although not a campaign commercial it is out in lots of Eastern Washington Markets,

Yes, but it's the same old formula. Touching content, good voice over. There needs to be something more hard-hitting with a bite. Something that gets real empathy.

Boy that is smart, put you best spokesperson over in the East to talk to low population farming towns.

Enter reality - our voters live on the I-5 route, not the wheat fields and orchards of the east.

Agree, she would be better in the commercial... she has a compelling story of NEED for these laws.

Protecting very old people, who look to be doing fine, very fine indeed, from attack from some un known threat?

And that will convince who? They they must approve what?

This gets complicated with three weeks to go.

i get the point about "they look like they are under no threat so why protect them" but one thing that has to be done first is just show the bigots how likeable gays/lesbians are. just make em like em, first.
we've got a bit of time left to then show the bigots that these likeable people are under threat.

spoiler alert 14
i don't think the point is that they are under a threat, but that they AREN'T a threat- to you, your family, your children. why stop them from getting married? they are harmless. give them their rights, because they deserve them plain and simple.

I guess we will see how the polls go - ads that work change opinion or move voters.

This seems a bit soft to me, but, maybe I just don't understand the genius of very well paid PR people.

The truth is I want to live with them, cause I bet they are great cooks and would do my laundry. And, let me use the extra car. Cheap room in the basement?

As you can tell my grand mother died a few years ago and these two would do nicely. I bet there are pot plants in the garden, of course, medical mj.

And one of them is named Pete to boot.

Approve Ref: 71 - waiting for my ballot, stamp all ready.

Singed: Go Ladies Go (I bet they drink a lot of tea)

great ad. first you establish who you are THEN you persuade, just alike a candidate's first wave says who she is then the second wave persuades.

So yes hopefully next wave of ads will show the heartbreak of denying familiy rights eg that lady whose partner died due to the flood.

"protect all families" is perfect 3 word message; it's positive and connects to shared values (families) everyone has; it does not let the right seize the deep rooted value (woo hoo for once!) (we've got values, not them!) and by not defining it as about "gay rights" one starts off on a common value. I don't think people vote for rights for minorities due to logical thinking about equality, it's when they see the minority as a set of real humans being truly harmed, they (the majority) can decide they don't want to be morally involved in that. So once separate but equal was shown to be a lie, not equal, the stage was set for civil rights. the NAACP marched for "voting rights" not "Black rights" and similarly the glbt movement needs to be in its communication and stories to the majority, about family rights and freedom rights (don't you think people should have the freedom to be who they are?) not a movement for glbt rights (although of course that's what it is; I'm talking about how to talk to the majority, how to connect to the majority, how to get rural yahoos and moderates to get it). In terms of message. the connection is about the rights and freedom we ALL have, this is part of the american dream and what the founders fought for -- liberty -- and once it's on that basis, the majority can connect emotively to the injustice suffered by the minority.

I really like the line, from the Charlene's Story video, "Each of us are protected, ONLY when all of us are protected."

They really need to use that - a lot.

Sorry, I don't understand the "they look like they're doing OK" line of reasoning in some of these comments. (Granted, they're all coming from unregistered troll-like users, but still.) Can everyone see that these ladies are at least in their sixties? The time will soon be upon them when they'll be called to make some serious decisions about health and housing issues. That's why they need protection. If one of them becomes seriously ill their lovely garden will not be much comfort.

Am I the only person who got a little misty at this commercial?

(Maybe I should look into that. The last time I started weeping at TV commercials, my birth control pill was to blame. Hrm.)

#10 from what position of authority do you speak? Have you done any research into effective strategy? Volunteered anytime? Donated any money? Written a letter to the editor? Talked to anyone about the importance of approving 71?

If you have great I would urge you to share this research with the slog but at this point I thinking bitching about the strategy that is being deployed. A strategy that almost 250 organizations from across the geographic, political, faith & age spectrum have gotten behind is a bit foolish. We each and every one of us needs to do everything we can to ensure Referendum 71 is APPROVEd.

In the Seattle area we don’t need to change minds but get people to send in their ballots. In old age homes we need to show seniors (who vote in large numbers) how this will affect people “like them”. In Eastern Washington we need to change minds so yes I think having Charlene there is going to help the campaign.

“If we each do a little is sure means a lot”

Wow, guess I can't have an opinion. I have done more than you can possibly do to Approve Ref: 71..... I have done all the things you mention.

Get a life.Get a clue. The enemy is the right wing, not an opinion from a pinko fag.

Charlene convinced the legislature including the Gov. So stash her in Eastern Washington is a good tactic? She is a woman, so appeals to our persuadable voters, younger so she isn't as easily dismissed, and has a TRUE story that shocks all about the freak flood and her dying partner.

So, my opinion, send the grannies to eastern Washington where there are few voters on our side and tons of stark ugly homophobia. Let Charlene up the vote here in the west, dense population, duh,and where we need to win big.... to carry the state.

Two nice old ladies on long term pensions - incl. Social Security twice, they live on $5,000.00 a month.

That is OK and stuff - but - even old timers will not identify with any problems they might be having.

Personal for sure, no social impact at all. Too abstract? Too tidy? Is there any viewer identity?

Fear not.

Where are the ads about the straight senior citizen couples who will also be affected by this bill not passing? We need to be showing commercials that will hit home with the people most likely to vote-- that's people over 50. And face up to the reality that they are more likely to be hostile to seeing this as a bill that helps gays and lesbians first.

The opposition has succesfully painted this as a gay marriage bill and the media, including the stranger, and the GLBT orgs seem to have gladly gone along.

I like the old couple better than Charlene Strong who didn't turn tragedy into a happy life, she turned tragedy into a huge settlement with the city, and got engaged to her bitch of a new wife on the eve of the premier of her dead wife's movie "for my wife". What a joke she is, its all smoke and mirrors. She hated the film, she doesn't like "dyke's" and she did nothing but get people to pay for a movie that should have been called the "Charlene Strong Story". Way to go Charlene I wish you nothing but the worst in life. Every month you cash that check from the city just recall is blood money.
