Webcam Death

Posted by on Sun, Oct 11, 2009 at 9:16 AM

The story of the pistol-packing soccer mom is becoming more and more twisted:

(CNN) — A Pennsylvania soccer mom was chatting with a friend via webcam when she was shot to death by her husband, who then went upstairs and shot himself, police said Friday.
Pistol-packing soccer mom Meleanie Hain was shot dead while chatting with a friend on a webcam, police said.

Meleanie Hain, 31, made national headlines last year as the mother who carried a loaded, holstered handgun to her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game.

She was found dead in her Lebanon, Pennsylvania, home along with her husband, Scott Hain, 33, on Wednesday evening, Lebanon police said.

Hain was in her kitchen talking with a friend via webcam just before her death, police said.

The friend, who police will not name, was looking away from the computer screen when he heard a shot and a scream, police said. He turned back to the monitor, he told police, and no longer saw Meleanie Hain but instead saw Scott Hain firing several rounds from a handgun toward where his wife had been.

Do not fear an international terrorist more than the person you share (or once shared) a bed with.

I wonder what they were chatting about? Kids? Soccer? Disgruntled husbands? Guns?

Agreed. Terrorism is thought to have begun with a 1946 hotel bombing, where homicide of one's spouse has been around for 1000s of years.

another successful deterrence of crime by someone carrying a gun. clearly they were discussing how she should off her hubby, and because he had a gun, he got to her first!

We will put this down as another episode of felony averted thru astute use of a gun, in our statistics.

Ironic that for all this couple's pro-gun fervor while alive, the father's actions are probably going to leave their children with a pretty strong anti-gun legacy.

Terrorism was invented by the Jews in 1946? Come on. Yes, that was a terrorist attack, no doubt about it, but it certainly wasn't the first ever. You can do better than that.

"Thank god she was armed so she could defend herself, amirite? "

Most women who are camming for their friends couldn't possibly conceal a weapon, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

I would like the police to mention what she was wearing at the time of her death.

There's no 'splainin' the inexplicable, Lucy: Our 'acting president' Ronald Reagan nearly expired of a gunshot - and yet - and yet - remained pro-gun and pro-NRA. About the same as nearly dying of AIDS and still bare-backing; having a lung removed and still smoking. I realize these are impoverished analogies, but nevertheless, Reiterations R Us..

It's kind of unfair to assume the person she's chatting to was "More then just a friend".

But I wonder about the motivation - a murder-suicide suggest quite a bit of hatred and depression.

As for the anti-gun: i.e: I strongly support stricter controls, but in this case, I think the husband would've grabbed a kitchen knife instead of a gun if he didn't have one.

@ 16 is right. She would be doing that while her husband and three children are at home? And the guy was looking away when the husband started firing. Some of you are presumptuous and gullible.

indeed.
they could have been having a relationship but not 'doing it' online then and there.
husband could have come home unexpectedly.

If only the kids had pistols, they could have shot daddy when he came in the door with his gun, and mommy would have lived.

@14: Incidents like this murder-suicide are valid reasons to be against the idea of carrying weapons around as a matter of course, but the idea that assassination attempts should cause anyone to be anti-gun is a little far-fetched. It's one thing to want to put greater controls on civilian purchase and use, but no one in their right mind believes that guns are simply going to cease to exist if we implement tighter controls.

Gun control advocates should really not use high-profile assassinations/attempts as evidence for anything, since these are precisely the kinds of events that would be most likely to happen even with more restrictive laws (e.g., the attempt on the Pope's life a few years ago). Determined psychopaths/political fanatics will find a way to get a gun. The real argument is that people who lose their head in the middle of a domestic dispute are more likely to kill someone if there's a gun around.

@12 ok, how about modern international terrorism since 1945, the single most often mentioned year of the 20th century. If that's too cloy, then, hmmm, the Vikings? On the gun argument, isn't ammunition more the topic these days as opposed to gun rights?

@13: "I would like the police to mention what she was wearing at the time of her death."

Yeah, because clearly she was asking for it. Your implied justification for domestic violence sickens me. To sloppily paraphrase a Mudede post from a couple years ago:

When we read about a grisly murder, we all want to believe that the victim is somehow responsible. "Oh, it's because they were cavorting with vile and violent people" or, "She must have been doing something to provoke her murderer, internet infidelity or the like."

The fact remains that, when push-button killing devices are at hand, there will always be a worse outcome than if they weren't.
