Save The Movies!

Posted by on Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 12:26 PM

So I was waiting to see A Serious Man on Friday—which, as Sean Nelson told you ten days ago, is fantastic—and this adorable trailer for The Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival came on:

I say: Nice work, gays and lesbians! Lindy West, after examining the YouTube video this morning, said: "cute" and "ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL." Among the all-star cast of ironic "We Are The World" imitators: Sarah Rudinoff, Nick Garrison, Team Gina, Sylvia O'Stayformore, and Fuschia Foxxx. Totally lovable!

However, others in the office disagree. "Too long, too insidery, and the joke wasn't clever at all," says Paul Constant, who claims that he was at Cinerama recently and saw a whole crowd turned against the gays and the lesbians and their festival by this here trailer. And Dave Schmader says it's "about 25 years too late" to be spoofing that tired old sing-along. In other words: totally hatable!

Which means we need an immediate and binding ruling on the Lesbian & Gay Film Festival trailer. Ready? Here we go:

Love it or hate it?

Definitely a vote for hates it. I saw it at the Harvard Exit a couple weeks ago and I thought it would never end!

I think "hate" is to strong of a word... more like "meh". When it stopped to load halfway through, I felt no desire to watch it through to the end.

The damage is done and we're stuck with it. To the producers of these yearly YouTubettes, Have an open invitation to all Seattle GLBT folk to come out; somewhere (Not Capitol Hill please) and invite the rest of the world to Seattle to watch the films. Something like that. To the point, easy, and fun.

Since LGBT film festivals have shown mostly the same tired crap for the past 25 years, the anachronism is quite apt.

"too insidery" is the best term. Trying too hard to be super cute too...

Since everyone hates it, it must be good.

It's just insidery enough. C'mon, it's local, whaddya want? I was tickled by how many people I knew, and glad at how many were willing to help pile on the cheese (in exchange for a little face time onscreen, of course).

My understanding is that funding to make/distribute queer movies by actual queers has been drying up, so on the basis of "beggars can't be choosers" maybe any little bit of publicity like this is all to the good.

Crank up the tempo. Too slow, too long and the song isn't creative enough to keep an "outsider" interested.

All I wanna know is, was that guy at 0:52 the kid from "Hook"?

...as I mentioned on Saturday, I was watching the Husky game, and a shorter version of this came on as a TV commercial during the game.

Now, I love my queer friends, in all their glory and uniqueness. I say, bring it on in volumes.

But, 3 weeks before an election on gay rights, I don't think this is the right commercial to be putting out to King County Husky Football fans.

Just saying.

I'm with Schmader. Seattle celebrities? I know Nick, Sylvia and that's it.

The Showgirls tryouts from a couple of years back was so much better.

i agree with a need for the 'meh' option....

Pretending to showcase a joyful, inclusive community ,,,, but really a boring, saccharine vanity piece.

Sadly, the Film Festival has lost some of its mojo over the years.

Fucking terrible. It was boring, boring, boring. There were hints at transgression, but for the most part, it felt like United Queers of Benneton showing off that we're just like everyone else. It felt dated. The kept the eye candy in the corner. Remake it with more Rat City Rollergirls, more guys barely covering their junk, and way, way, way better lyrics.

I liked the madcap version from last year - this is like something from GSBA - OK for the Chamber of Commerce crowd.

Why try to redo the done? Good stuff that is queer is totally new and fresh - original - and in the month of Oct., well...hey..hey...hey Halloween theme might be OK too.

Three Dollar has been reduced to 50 cents on this one.

(and cutsey gay men are stupid, silly, stereotypical and just good for the park suck off - not sexy at all - note fag hags)

it was meh...and how can you have a video that's supposed to have Seattle's gay celebrities in it without Dina Martina (who I guess technically isn't gay), and 78% of The Stranger staff?

also, where's Boe Odyssey?

I love the film festival and applaud their attempt to get different parts of this community together for this video. And to the person who hated it because it shows "... we're just like everyone else...", ummm, I didn't know we were that different than the rest of the human race.

Some people try hard to make QUEER boring - this time they managed.

Sorry, we are not just like every body else. Go to the GSBA meetings for that drivel.

The video missed the mark by a long shot - I bet they were friends of friends who made it.

You know, the "old boy or old girl network", which is by definition incompetent. Or at least not the best talent in town.

What would Quentin Crisp think of this? He is the focus queer of the festival. I think he would sniff a lot.-, offer an honest opinion in the negative all the while trying to be interested and polite ....

Then,he would flame on to the the next adventure in a tea room.... wondering who were those fucking people?
