You Can't Have 'em Both: Homes for Straight People or Rights for Gays

Posted by on Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 12:04 PM

There's a new ad playing on local radio that encourages voters to reject Referendum 71. Two women are having a coffee-talk chat about the November ballot measure. They agree: The legislature's gone astray by passing a bill to give rights to gay couples instead of helping wholesome families in a bad economy. “The bill they passed expands the rights of same-sex partners to be equal to married couples,” says one of the characters. “How does that help people who are losing their home?”

The ad has a decidedly more mainstream message than the “God’s Mandate” TV commercial run by the Christian fanatics at Protect Marriage Washington. This ad was paid for by the group called Vote Reject R-71, a new PAC I wrote about on Friday, which is run by a Republican strategist. The group hasn’t reported any contributions yet, but they plan to raise big money—and must have already raised enough dough to run this ad.

Let's see... I bet it helps elderly and homosexual couples that are losing their homes.

Oh right, they're not people.

This infuriated me this morning. I have written letters, gone to rallies. What else can we do?

"Gay marriage won't pay off my three mortgages, so we should reject it."

Damn. That is a hell of a non sequitur. I mean, gay marriage also won't cure cancer, so we should reject it, right? But at the same time, keeping these bigots in their homes ALSO won't cure cancer! Clearly we must do nothing at all!

Fucking utopia fallacy. Ugh.

@3 What else can you do?
1) Volunteer with the Approve 71 Campaign.
2)Contribute money so they can afford to retaliate nonsense like this.
3)Tell your friends to vote Approve 71 -- and hound the until they do.

Just remember, the more they can confuse voters, the higher the No vote on any initiative or referendum.

Personally ask all your friends, colleagues and relatives in this state to vote. Tell them why.

God tactic - run against the fools in Olympia - sorta of anti gay, but, not really.

Bet it is based on good polling.

Wonder why our side is not called --- Approve Ref: 71--- all the families stuff is feel good clutter in a message.

Women support our side - so this is a good target stheme for suburban women.

Three weeks, Get out the Seattle Vote.

So if you reject R-71, will you receive assistance on your defaulted mortgage? Is this why we need to conceal the signatures from the referendum, to protect the credit ratings of the signers?

Very true, gay marriage will not pay your defaulted mortgage. Gay porn on the other hand...

@9 - no, you'll be drafted, shipped to Iraq, and then when they find out you're gay, they'll deny your same sex husband any survivor benefits under DADT. So your same sex house will be sold off.

... oh, you weren't serious?

So, they DO want schools to be properly funded. Are they going to approve taxes for that purpose?

@4,

I guess you don't listen to KING FM much. ALL their political ads are right wing.

Truly asinine. I don't know how you can have a discourse with someone who argues in such bad faith. I will hector my friends into phone banking this week.

Propaganda doesn't have to be logical to be effective. The reason this ad is effective is that it provides a "cover story" reason for voting no on Ref 71. A certain number of "no" voters don't want to admit it's homophobia motivating them to vote no, so they can tell themselves: "with the economy so bad, it's wrong for government to focus on a frivolity like gay civil rights."

There is phone banking next Monday-Wednesday at the ACLU's downtown office at 2nd and Cherry. You can get in tough with them through Gabriela Quintana, at gquintana@aclu-wa.org.

What is the Approve R-71 ad campaign looking like? How can we abate the disinformation the Reject campaign is spreading?

It makes perfectly good sense to use obviously stupid advertisements to get out the Jeebus vote, since Christians are preselected for willingness to believe in the absence of a logical basis for their belief.

History teaches us that the more obviously stupid a set of religious beliefs the greater the size of the army sent to, um, liberate the heathens.

The real question is are these ads stupid enough for Christianity to be victorious over reason?
