While a black cannot marry a white in Louisiana, apparently an Imbecile can marry a Moron and produce an Idiot.

Ladies and gentleman, the very definition of a compassionate conservative. "I done it for the children!" I'm sorry they didn't press him into using a term like "quadroon" though.

Shouldn't the fat old slob be retired by now anyways? Think so.

The man is as "conservative" as an old fart in ballet suite.

Mr. Burns should resign immediately.

And judicial officials should be elected, not appointed. it's a loophole too many times exploited.

My ex-wife's mom and her partner were very liberal folks but were convinced that interracial marriage was wrong "because of the children." It drove my ex-wife and me crazy and we openly disagreed with them, although they were not at all willing to change their minds. Otherwise decent old folks can have some strange convictions, and this guy decided to act on his but also told the couple where they could go to get married. Doesn't seem to me like such a monster.

I agree with 13. Instead of belittling an old guy for some outdated but well meaning beliefs, take heart that times are changing. How many of us may older members of family that believe the same thing. And, would you say the same if the person in question was not a white christian male from the south? He did after all tell them where to go.

@13, @17 - So, now we just tolerate racism until the people who hold those beliefs die because racism sort of out of fashion now?

And what about being a civil servant do you not understand? I don't just think his beliefs are total bullshit, but that his work ethic stinks, too.

@17 - This judge can be as racist (or whatever you want to call it when a person doesn't believe in interracial marriage "because of the children") in his heart as he wants, but he cannot act on it to use the power of the state to discriminate based on race. He's a judge - he should know this better than the average layperson.

@13 and 17. So would it be ok for a restaurant not to serve interracial couples, or for a hotel not to allow them to stay, as long as they could point out where the couple could go to eat or stay? What about police offiers - could they choose not to help people based on their race as long as the officers pointed out someone who would?

@18 - Being from SC and black, we usually just let old racist fuckers keep to themselves and put them out in the boon docks away from civilization until they either need medical attention or die. The best way to scare the shit out of them is to have a black doctor or nurse care for them as they beg for a white doctor or nurse, then say to them with a smile "unfortunately, these are all we have on staff for the next 24 hours"

@20. How about those Justice Department lawyers who are writing briefs upholding DADT, the law of the land? On Slog, don't we think those are the assholes? So it's okay to not uphold the law when you're "right," but when you're "wrong," you had better just do your job? Who's to say what is "right" and "wrong." I think this guy needs to retire but he is not a monster. Lots of life is gray, not black and white.

The guy is clearly an ignorant and bigoted buffoon, yet his intolerance is mirrored by that exhibited in quite a few of the ignorant buffoons pillaring him. Let this schmuck be an object lesson: examine and correct your own irrational biases.

And yet, LGBT couples are denied the right to marry every single day and no one says a word about that. This is just as outrageous to me.

I'm not saying that refusing to marry an interracial couple isn't bad. I am just saying that LGBT couples face it too and I'd be mighty happy to see such outrage in defense of us.

By his logic, he wouldn't conduct any marriage ceremony that may result in offspring since there is a good likelihood that any particular marriage will fail resulting in children raised in a broken home which is certainly not ideal or fair to the children.

Many fundamentalists still believe inter-racial marriage is a sin.

@22 - is that true?! not a joke? There really are people so messed up that they would ask for a white doctor or nurse when they are sick and a black one is there to treat them?
Sorry, i am not american born, there are some things i still dont know about US... If true, that is shocking..

@31 yes. it's true. there are some racist people that will ask for a white doctor or nurse in this day of age. not as often as 20 or 30 years ago, but it still comes up every once in a while. my mom's a nurse, i've heard her complain about them from time to time.

"The guy is clearly an ignorant and bigoted buffoon, yet his intolerance is mirrored by that exhibited in quite a few of the ignorant buffoons pillaring him."

Amusing that you are decrying ignorance, yet have no idea how to spell pillory or pillorying. No doubt its etymology eludes you as well. Perhaps you can redeem yourself with a salacious definition for "pillaring him"?
