Don't see how you can spin this in a way that helps McGinn.

Except with the subheads:

HE STILL OPPOSES IT, BUT WON’T FIGHT IT
Reaction to council’s vote to move ahead

as @1 said.

Besides, there's still no funding, no public hearings (mandatory), no EIS (lawsuits on that), and no public vote (mandatory, since the incumbent city council burnt up all the councilmanic bonding authority).

;-)

This is about as impressive as McCain "suspending" his campaign to "concentrate" on the financial crisis.

How about this - the only reason I was considering voting for Mallahan was the tunnel issue. I don't love the tunnel, but we have to do something, and do it soon. Tunnel is better than 5 more years of indecision.

McGinn just showed us a pragmatic side, and I will now vote for him without reservation.

(p.s. No need to debate about the tunnel - whether I am right or not doesn't matter. The point is that people who think like me will now be MORE likely to vote for McGinn.)

this made me vote for McGinn! He's taking a practical approach to it now

@5

Care to put the Stranger's page hits up against the Times?

Mallahan and Hutchison will each WIN big.

King County does not vote the same as Capitol Hill. If you read more than one news source you'd know this.

so, whose going to have their taxes raised in Seattle, and by how much?

if that law stays in effect.

If it doesn't which legislators from Walla Walla and Chehalis are going to say "oh right, I was totally wrong to pass that illegal law, OF COURSE I will saddle my own constituents with the tremendous risk of cost overruns in order to do a favor for our beloved Master, The City of Seattle, because taxpayers here in Walla Wall just love Seattle so much!"

It helped McGinn with me, Dan. Whatever the lack of merit in the tunnel idea, I did NOT want the mayor relitigating it; at this point the tunnel has too many fans, and opposition is nothing but a spanner in the works. For me, McGinn's militant tunnel opposition was a barrier to voting for him. His new stance, not letting Seattle taxpayers get stuck with the cost overruns, liberates me from having to seriously consider voting for Mallahan, who seems to want to be mayor of only the north end of the city.

I was previously disappointed in McGinn's stance on the tunnel but liked him overall and now I'm not disappointed with his stance on the tunnel and I definitely like him better than Mallahan. We're not in the primaries anymore. Time to vote!

McGinn = the Obama Kool-Aid of 2009!!

And we all know that Obama brought all sorts of change! I mean single payer universal health care, and end to our wars overseas, massive amounts of climate change legislation, the end of discrimination against gays and lesbian... Oh wait..

Yeah, sure vote for McGinn (or the other idiot for that matter) but don't start bitching when they start to fuck things up worse than they already are.

@8 - So, your point is what? Dan's claim that the headline hurts McGinn is even more meaningless than the headline itself?

@14 - Give a guy a full term, jesus, you can't change the world in 9 months - have you even been to this country? And it's a stretch to say he's "fucked things up worse than they already are". Also: say what you will, but Obama won the election. So, his supporters were right about that, at least.

Wow. Maligning people for changing their positions after well-thought and persuasive arguments are made for the other side is something I expect from Republicans, not gay advice-columnists.

Stick to bashing pussies, faggot.

Well, it's nice to see that public opinion isn't monolithic on this issue. Count me in the camp of people who will feel comfortable voting for McGinn without reservation now that he's decided to get realistic about this tunnel business. I have always preferred McGinn's approach to other areas of city policy, and I'd never vote for someone who couldn't be bothered to vote in past local elections.

For those who are just tuning into the race now, what they know so far is
1) McGinn opposes the tunnel
2) Mallahan is a business guy with experience running big projects and managing people
3) McGinn has been annoying people with robocalls for weeks
4) McGinn's most recent robocall was straight out of Karl Rove's playbook-- and just as believable as the WMD claims
5) McGinn has now backed off his staunch opposition of "that tunnel", thus leaving him without an issue or stance beyond "I'll listen" and "I'll look into that".

"Nuanced"? FUCK THAT. Seattle needs a leader. Someone more inclusive than Ceis' kneecapping. Someone more locally focused than Nickels' "America's Mayor". Someone more balanced and realistic than McGinn's anti-car position. 30% of people in this election are undecided. Not "leaning toward Mallahan because of his tunnel position"-- undecided. Ordinary voters are going to take one look at this chump and vote for Mallahan.

Still waiting on reason #1 why any of this makes Mallahan's attempt to purchase the Mayor's office after never having lifted a finger for the city or any civic affairs until now credible...

More Pie, you've got a hell of a lot of nerve to associate the word "leader" with Joe Mallahan. Mallahan is about as much a political leader as the male model in the Marlboro man ads was a cowboy. What issues or agenda has he expressed any passion for, or even passing interest in, besides simply trying to get the title Mayor in front of his name? What "progressive values" (to use the phrase he repeats ad nauseum) has he ever in his life stood up for in a way that wasn't completely self-serving and dully, cravenly self-interested?

It's remarkable all the fake hopes and dreams some folks are able to pour into the empty political vessel that is Joe Mallahan.

@14 - He has brought all kinds of change. Because of Obama, we actually will see healthcare reform, even if it hasn't happened yet. Heck, Republicans now agree we need healthcare reform, which is an amazing accomplishment alone. Obama also won the Nobel Peace Prize, dramatically shifted the world's opinion of America from what it was under Bush, help turned around the failed economy and stock market (we passed 10K this week), stopped the ban on funding stem cell research, has taken major steps towards building a green economy, protected more than 2 million acres of wilderness land and several rivers with the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, reversed a ton of anti-environment legislation from the Bush era, passed the largest economic stimulus bill in American history, set a fixed timetable for withdrawing U.S. combat forces from Iraq, expanded children's health insurance (through a cigarette tax), engaged in dialog with world leaders Bush refused to, made it easier for Cuban-Americans to visit their families in Cuba, began the long path of diminishing lobbyist's role in the White House, began to close down Guantanamo Bay prison, Cash for Clunkers, engaged the Muslim world, made it easier for people to buy their first house...

@25 -- He has somehow managed to get the entire Seattle political establishment (excepting the Stranger and the enviro-left) behind him. I'm not comparing him to Bill Clinton or Teddy Roosevelt or anything, but Mallahan has at least enough political sense to own the traditional power base.

He may have bought his way onto the ballot, but he’s doing something right to stay in the lead.

@27, What Mallahan is doing is talking only in sound bites and targeting the low-information voter. He has never given an example of how he has driven efficiencies, something he claims to have done to the tune of millions of dollars. He just expects us to believe him because he has an MBA (just like George Bush). I know Mallahan is not a Republican, but he sure talks like one.

Mallahan has not lifted a finger to help a single group in the city of Seattle the whole time he's been here. He is only in this race because he's rich, not because he stands for anything (unless you count the status quo).

McGinn just won my vote with this decision.

This would have helped him more if he did it earlier. As a candidate coming from the left, he needed to focus his post-primary campaign on making himself palatable to moderate liberals. His policy stuff did that to some extent, but was largely overshadowed by the tunnel thing.

Anyway, I hope it's not too late. Mallahan is hardly a seasoned business man, he's an empty-headed middle manager who was lucky enough to be in Redmond at the right time to ride BillG's coattails. Kind of like Tina Podlowski.

This is perfect for Seattle! It's exactly that kind of passive-aggressiveness that makes the Northwest great.

"Hell no I don't to go to that restaurant--the food is a rip off. But if you nine want to go there I guess I have to. I won't pay for any tip though..."

Dude, I think I know that guy. Wait, I think I am that guy...

Seattle-bred suckers!
