DJ Hero: "Pick Me, I'm an Urban Guitar Hero!"

Posted by on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 10:17 AM

Some people think guitars are boring. Where are their opportunities to buy one-off controllers for their gaming consoles? Look no further than this week's release of DJ Hero. Seriously, look no further:

There's no gameplay in evidence, and I'm pretty sure DJ Shadow's eyes don't usually glow with a hellish green fury, but now I totally want to explode 18-wheelers with the power of my tight beats. Some sizable names were involved in the shenanigans: Besides Shadow, there's Daft Punk, Cut Chemist, Jazzy Jeff, Grandmaster Flash... Maybe they're trying too hard, but that's not the worst thing in the world. Plus they promise a DJ vs. Guitar mode. Inclusive!

The Stranger Testing Department is Rob Lightner and Paul Hughes.

The actual game might be terrible, but that is a pretty great intro.

Any Qbert involvement?

The Music Hero stuff has gone down the tubes since Activision bought Red Octane. Endless sequels a la Guitar Hero are going by the by as more good DLC keeps coming out for Rock Band. Maybe this game will bring the last few stragglers who have yet to buy a Something Hero into the fold, or maybe just those who don't like metal. I, however, have zero interest in this one.

But yes, a kinda cool intro video.

I played the demo in a shop a couple weeks ago and it was a lot of fun. Sure, it was on easy mode and I didn't know half of what I was supposed to do but it was a trip. I'd like to give the real deal a try.

With the Beatles Rock Band coming out this year, I predicted that we're five years out from The Grey Album as a bemani game. I wonder how right I was...

I've played this a couple times at Best Buy. It's a lot more fun than I thought it'd be, but not worth the $120 price tag. I'll wait until it inevitably goes on clearance.

Jazzy Jeff sans the Fresh Prince?

I have to confess, while none of the other various 'Heros' have appealed to me at all, I saw a commercial for this one and thought I might check it out.

ummm how do you not put hova on the list of "sizable names" involved with dj hero?

too expensive right now but i'm so there when it's dropped to 150 or 125 in 6 months.

Jay-Z is on DJ Hero. The lawyers will have to work extra hard to get The Beatles to sign off on any incarnation of the Grey Album, let alone a video game version, but I think it could happen in five years.
