Slog tipper Emma writes about intimidation of "Approve Referendum 71" sign wavers in Olympia:

Olympia's sign waving rally on Sunday the 1st (Black Lake Blvd & Cooper Point Rd) was overtaken by bullies late in the afternoon. The rally went peacefully from 12 - 4 pm. At 4 pm, Pastor Roy & his wife Valerie appeared, (local leaders of the anti-gay "Reject" campaign who are based in Dupont but lead a Church in Lacey). They had summoned 40 - 50 young men and a few young women who bullied us out of their way by jostling us and blowing painfully loud air horns close to where we were already standing. They appeared to be almost entirely Russian immigrants from one of the Tacoma churches involved in the anti-gay campaign. I asked Pastor Roy & Valerie to request their recruits to stop blaring the air horn in our ears and not to bully our sign wavers. Valerie blew me off and Pastor Roy just walked away. Ironically, last weekend when both sides were at the Lacey rally, our side made it a point to be courteous, and I even intervened in a few situations where Pastor Roy thought our people were being aggressive.

This was a pretty scary encounter. Most of our people left, including one father with a toddler. Two organizers (including myself) strongly encouraged the handful our supporters still there to leave in pairs to be safe.

Emma asks folk to join them from 4:30 p.m to 6:00 p.m. this afternoon and tomorrow "to ensure our safety in numbers and stand up against intimidation" at Plum & Union and Black Lake & Cooper Point. Go and be nice. Be really, really nice.

WHAT DOES BEING NICE HAVE TO DO WITH IT? This is politics people it's messy and ugly. In some nations they kill each over this sort of stuff and many of those people are immigrants to America and bring with them their political intimidation skills. So don't ask your opponents to "be nice". That just shows you to be ignorant of the process as it's maturing here in America. "Our side made it a point to be courteous, and I even intervened in a few situations where Pastor Roy thought our people were being aggressive." Be prepared to hold your ground that might mean you have to push back. Yeah it's ugly yeah it's mean yeah it's bad yeah it's not nice yeah it's dangerous yeah it's violence in the making yeah it's politics that matters. Oh do it with a smile.

Thank you Sargon.

Immigrants to this country need to learn right away that, while America isn't always about acceptance, it IS about tolerance.

From what I've read these past couple of weeks, the orthodox Russians are the new face of evil in WA State (or just very easily manipulated).
If you look at the Facebook page the Reject bigots have, there's a large % of YOUNG Russians.

Is outreach to these folks a possibility?

And, yes, I remember the Pride gay-bashing by the Russians a couple of years back.

Sue their fucking church and sue the fucking pastor ask them on the witness stand why don't they believe in american free speech?

Horns send us home?!?!!? Mean spirited opponents send us home?!!?!?

Wow!

I thought we wanted this more than that... What the fuck?

Be a pacifist if you must, but realize that larger part of being a pacifist involves taking a beating in plain view so that the rest of the world is forced to witness the injustice of the opposition. Not running and hiding from the opposition's hostility.

Personally, I prefer a more confrontational approach... Speak softly and carry a big stick, but be prepared to yell and swing that stick when necessary to hold your ground.

Keep it up Holden. Your last ditch efforts are quite transparent. The more your name call and spread lies, the more evident it will be to those yet undecided.

Folks, just remember if you want to preserve the family and what it means, if you want to truly voice your opinion and let Olympia know what you think and you want to stop the distortions and name calling from the gay marriage side, you can make the difference.

Just remember, there are more of us in the real world than there are like Dom and most here. Make the difference and send Olympia a resolute message, to not disrupt the family.

If you don't make your voice heard, you will be condoning amongst many things the vicious name callings: "bigots", ", "douchebags", etc...that Dom and Savage amongst others like to throw carelessly around against us.

All of the immigrants from the former Soviet Union can here as Religious refugees and are legal citizens. These are the bigots of which we speak. Many of them are supported by your tax dollars as the adults generally don't speak English and many don't work. You can't deport them they are citizens. And just a side note, you are legally allowed to defend yourself (i.e. pushing back) if you are attacked. So #12 is off the mark, if you want to make an issue of it, push back and have your mates testify to your being attacked and defending yourself, if it should come to a court of law (which it most likely wont). No more Mister Nice Gay.

LosersChild says:

"Keep it up Holden. Your last ditch efforts are quite transparent. The more your name call and spread lies, the more evident it will be to those yet undecided."

Yeah, sweetheart, who's telling lies? Get educated, then come back. How many times have YOU spread lies in the name of your mysterious sky fairy? Care to count?

And why are you so fascinated with threads about gays? Something you want to admit?

LovesChards says:

""if you want to preserve the family and what it means..."

Then you'll open your mind and heart to what different families are comprised of, and not tell others their idea of family is incorrect.

Face it, LonersChild, if you believe in your God, you know he doesn't make mistakes. Or if gay wasn't meant to be gay, then he DOES.

@ 18 - Also, homphobia & gay bashing are much more rampant in Russia, to the point where it's commonplace. Not sure why that is, but the effect is that young people in Russia are indoctrinated into a very homophobic mindset by the time they're teenagers. When they come over here (with their families, presumably), that homophobia doesn't just go away.

@23 There is no answer to that question. It cannot be answered, because equal rights for all Americans does not in any way disrupt, endanger, or in any way hurt families.

In fact, the opposite is true. I know many families who will be disrupted, endangered and hurt if R-71 is rejected.

The religious conservatives who want R-71 rejected, the real life Loveschilds, are the most despicable people in our society today. I applaud the efforts of so many other churches (including the one I got married in) to support families and call for R-71's approval.

I used to live in Olympia and what a lot of people forget with the presence of Evergreen and other progressive scenes is that Olympia is surrounded by really small farming communities like Shelton, Chehalis, and Tenino. Most of these really conservative and still drive around Olympia with confederate flag stickers on the windows of their pickups.
That situation sucks but isn't all that surprising.

@ 23 You don't want anyone to explain this to you. But the answer is very simple if you truly open your heart and eyes to the truth.

At the core of gay marriage is the attempt at creating confusion about the time honored institution that constitutes the basic building block for all societies. Man and woman, united in marriage for the creation and nurturing of future citizens. It's the most basic and natural societal model that has been created not by humans but by a higher force.

You may call it nature, God, the force of good, universe, what have you, but it is undeniable. If we change the face of it, our already tumultuous society will be thrown into more confusion and further degradation. Because gay marriage at it's core is at best a hollow pretense that is void of the primordial energies, yin-yang (male-female), the natural equation that is complementary, that is fundamental if you will for the existence of life here on Earth.

All societies since recorded history began, who have seek to survive in some way or another have regulated sexual behavior in marriage within the confines of women and men entering into unions. As such all else would be nothing more than mockery, or a cheap attempt that would only serve to diminish the real thing, the family.

@34, I am totally with you. If gay people get married then straight people will stop procreating and then we will have a shortage of expendable footsoldiers for our army, serfs to work our fields and concubines for the upper castes. Regulating sexual behavior is essential to maintaining this lifestyle. We must also not forget that in traditional society women are property.

When I heard about this gay marriage Trojan horse referendum, I too was struck with an insatiable desire for gay sex, but a no vote on R71 will make that desire subside and we can end this charade.

I've never posted a reaction to this Loveschild before, and she/he has probably been called this many times...but, it's worth repeating just cause it makes me feel good.

Loveschild is an intolerant, prejudiced bigot, hiding behind "God's Love", with not a shred of love in his/her heart. He/she is also no different from the low-life gay-basher at 2 am on some street corner.

If Ref 71 is approved tomorrow night, I'd like to hear from him/her how their life has changed on Wednesday. Will the heavens open up and swallow WA State up whole?
Will hellfire rage?

Nope, the only difference in this person's hateful little life will be that it'll be Wednesday, and not Tuesday.

Faulty logic, LC.

Your theory of marriage equality being a threat to the family is hollow. Here's your real threats. It's the same old enemies divorce, absent father, etc., all put the child at high risk of poverty. Funny how we never hear about you working to solve these problems. And, that you think that your continual refusal to provide equality and equal protection under the law will some how make families that don't fit your "ideal", your "yin-yang", to suddenly cease to exist. It won't, these families will exist, less protected if you have your way, but they will continue on without your approval. So much for social justice and compassion.

Data from the Natality Data Sets, National Vital Statistics System (NVSS)

Childbearing by unmarried women has resumed a steep climb since 2002.
Births to unmarried women totaled 1,714,643 in 2007, 26% more than in 2002. Nearly 4 in 10 U.S. births were to unmarried women in 2007.
Birth rates have risen considerably for unmarried women in their twenties and over, while declining or changing little for unmarried teenagers.
Nonmarital birth rates are highest for Hispanic women followed by black women. Rates for non-Hispanic white and Asian or Pacific Islander women are much lower.
Most births to teenagers (86% in 2007) are nonmarital, but 60% of births to women 20–24 and nearly one-third of births to women 25–29 were nonmarital in 2007.
Teenagers accounted for just 23% of nonmarital births in 2007, down steeply from 50% in 1970.

chic65, not only will the sky fall down, the earth open up and swallow us all, and plants and animals attempt to murder us, but SCHOOL teachers will all of a sudden start teaching that Gay people are just like Str8 people. That Black people are just like White people. That Jews and Muslims and Christians all have equal rights in America to behave and TEACH what they want at home and in their place of worship. Teachers will all of a sudden say, "Johnny, Sally, and Sue (that boy over there) you're all loved equally by your parents. They love you". I know chic65, ain't is disgusting. Loveschild and her band of bigots know how dangerous such teachings are. So should R-71 be approved, plan to have Johnny and Sally and Sue (that boy over there) come home and ask, "Mommy do you really love me like the teacher said?" Loveschild and her band of bigots are sure to have their child come home and ask just such a disgusting question.

Loveschild you're an idiot. Sorry but you say "All societies since recorded history began, who have seek to survive in some way or another have regulated sexual behavior in marriage within the confines of women and men entering into unions."

That'
s total crap. The Vikings took 30000 Irish chix to Iceland, is that entering a union? In Biblical times and in many societies they had kings with harems and enuchs, is that that what you want to preserve? At other times the status of women was basically chattel, or a step above cattle and sheep, with traditions in which the woman is handed over by one family to the "groom" without her consent.

And traditionally, husbands could rape their wives, is that the tradition you support?

The marriage institution you say you support is specific to time and place in history and there have often been gay unions alonside or in marriage as in the Greeks or the Romans, good god woman, read a history book from time to time!

Lots of people were honking and waving and showing overwhelming support for ref 71, including us! It made me happy to see such a strong, healthy turnout, and was an inspiration to both me and my 15-year-old daughter, whose two legally married uncles welcomed her as a flower girl at their wedding to each other several years ago.
