Voters in Kalamazoo, Michigan, decide to "keep a city ordinance protecting gay, lesbian, and transgendered people" from discrimination in employment, housing, or public accommodations. Anti-gay bigots forced the issue onto the ballot, claiming that the city ordinance granted gays and lesbians "special rights." Voters are backing civil rights protections in Kalamazoo by a wide margin.

And in Houston, Texas, a lesbian is ahead in a four-way race for mayor. If Annise Parker wins—she's currently got 29% of the vote, three points ahead of her nearest rival—Houston will be the country's biggest city with an openly gay mayor. Here's hoping there aren't any 18-year-old Bovina Breedloves in Parker's closet.

it's a tiny victory, but hey -- way to go to my hometown for not setting back the clock further on equal rights!

Houston Fucking Texas electing a lesbian for mayor?

Isn't that one of the signs fortelling the coming of the apocalypse?

@3 you might be surprised up there in Washington, but here in Houston, no one is surprised to see Annise in the lead. Houstonians are generous of spirit and judge people by what they do, not who they are. We've elected Annise to city controller in the past, and she's done a kickass job, and has run a great campaign. It's basically a 3-way race among 3 Democrats - because yes, Houston tends to elect Democrats city-wide - #4 is a Republican so crazy Republicans don't want to vote for him and is trailing behind the top 3.

I worked at a an amusement park call Cedar Point over the summer (located by Lake Erie) and there were a lot of kids from Kalamazoo. From what I've heard of them and their parents, the passage there doesn't surprise me.
