Everyone lock up your valuables. Years ago I went to hear (then pres) Clinton speak, and he awarded the police department of Sacramento with some sort of award. Dozens of police officers were there to accept this award. When I returned to my car, the lock had been picked and my CD collection stolen. Not all thiefs are stupid.

@3 reminds me of something I heard about Houdini. He'd put on free performances sometimes, hanging upside down in a straitjacket over the street. He'd free himself while the crowd below watched. Pickpockets loved it too. So I guess for some poor unlucky souls those performances weren't really free.
