Egyptians Attack Algerian Embassy After Egypt Loses World Cup Qualifying Match

Posted by on Fri, Nov 20, 2009 at 8:26 AM

BBC reports:

Riot police in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, pushed back a violent demonstration near the Algerian embassy in the early hours of Friday.

Egyptian protesters reportedly hurled firebombs at police protecting the embassy and overturned a police van.
Egypt's Interior Ministry said 35 people were injured.

The clashes stem from Egypt's defeat by Algeria in a World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday, securing Algeria the last African place for next year's finals.

On Friday Alaa Mubarak, the son of Egypt's president Hosni Mubarak, made a rare public statement calling for a "tough stance" to be taken against Algeria.

"When you insult my dignity... I will beat you on the head," the businessman, who had attended the game in Khartoum, said.

On Thursday night around 1,000 Egyptians burned Algerian flags in a street near the Algerian embassy. The protests continued into the morning, with 15 cars reported damaged, along with a number of shops. The ministry said 11 police officers were among the injured.

For me, this is what football is all about. The sport has a profound and terrifying connection to the racial and nationalistic cores of its fans. In Seattle, we see the sunny and progressive side of the sport, the Sounders; but in much of the world, football is all darkness and primitive forces. I prefer squash and cricket.

It would be cool if Pakistan and India exchanged nukes over a soccer game. THAT would be so AWESOME!!!

Some fans have adopted footb...um, soccer...as their platform for the commission of racist, nationalist, sexist and homophobic acts.

But in far more cases, fans look forward to supporting their team and country in a positive, at least benign, manner. I've had the pleasure of seeing USA, Honduras, England, Germany, Holland and Argentina play in games primarily abroad in Europe but a couple games here. Friendlies and World Cup ties. In each case, the mood of the crowd was of a boisterous and good-spirited competition.

Sentiments such as "all darkness and primitive forces" reveal your brush is far too broad, Charles.

Good Morning Charles,
Yeah, you have a point. The Seattle Sounders are the exception. I don't know which South American countries but two of them nearly went to war after a football (soccer) match. I recall a goalkeeper from Colombia (?) being murdered many years ago for not performing well enough at a match (his team lost and he presumably allowed a goal). Football certainly brings out the inner animal in some fans (another example are the English hooligans) oustide of the USA. We have pretty sedate fans here. But, then again we have four other popular spectator sports (American football, baseball, basketball and hockey) to indulge in.

@14 - Maybe you're thinking of Andrés Escobar, a defender on the Columbian Team at the 1994 World Cup. He scored an own-goal, and was murdered shortly after the team returned home.

@18, there are no Arsenal hooligans, and not many Man Utd ones. Those are posh clubs. The biggest trouble Arsenal fans are likely to get in is a little pushing and shoving in the line for prawn sandwiches.

English fans are pussycats for the most part, anyways. If you want trouble you need to visit Italy, or Serbia, or Turkey. But you know, it doesn't really have anything to do with the football. These rioting Egyptians aren't angry about football, they're angry about being Egyptian.

#14- The war you're referring to is of course the famous "Football War" between El Salvador and Honduras in 1968, chronicled best by Ryszard Kapuściński. It's one of those things that everyone else in the world knows about (same with Escobar), but not Americans cause, well, it's soccer and who cares.

get your facts straight please...why would Alaa Mubarak, the son of the president, call? because his team lost a soccer game. I'm so tired of cheats writing articles like you, and boldfacing the unimportant part of the story too. I've been to Sudan to watch that game, and the entire reason the Egyptians are mad, is because after the game they have been attacked by Algerians who had knives and other weapons. They even had to take shelter, fearing the stones and weapons that had been thrown on them. Lots were injured, and every minute they were under the threat of dying.

Stop fake articles please.

Excuse me guys, I wonder where you get your news from..
First of all Egyptian fans were too busy celebrating to attack the coach who actually lost the match. Egyptians were thanking him in their minds. They do not need to attack anyone. I do not what happened in that alegrian bus, but what I know is that the report and the videos showed that the glass of the bus was chattered outside the bus not inside which shows that the glass was broken from the inside of the bus. Algerian People are known to be very passionate and maybe the players did that to themselves in order to avoid the anger of the Algerian fans at home. (see youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zc2ETddu… (that is very interesting scientific facts about the attack, one of the players was hit on the arm, how did that rock get to him if he was sitting in his seat? How did the other player get hit in his head from behind? did the rock cut through the seat or did he have his head out of the window? ..etc
That is number one. Number 2 is that the Egyptian fans in Sudan were chased by Algerian as a revenge for their four players. this was also filmed. See Youtube. Algerians had bought knives and walked in troops. They chased women who had their kids on their arms and this is filmed too. Because the Egyptian freaked out, among which were famous celebrities (that's why everything was filmed).. The Egyptians gathered infront of the Algerian Embassy, requesting an explanation from the Algerian Authorities.
Also even if such attacks had happened, by an Egyptian which obviously (from the video) it is unlikely, don't you think that algeria's reaction is a bit too much? Terrorizing Women and children in Sudan and destroying egyptian investments in Algeria? Anyone can watch the match and see for themselves how the two players played and who was too aggressive all through the match.. Watching the game will also allow you to see the different fans' reactions.. which ones are gesturing to kill the others which ones are just stressed by the match..

I think it is a shame to not think and just be herded around like sheep..

There were no attacks and surely a team that loses a match will not attack the other team's Embassy.. If the person reporting these news does not know the truth, then maybe he/she has not done his/her homework.

Way to go sueta that's what everyone should react. If you want to publish some news you must do your homework first. To everyone go to you tube and type algeria and Egypt and you will see a lot of interesting stuff. Just go there and take a look before you type your comment.
