Census Worker's Death Believed to Be an Insurance Scam, Authorities Allege

Posted by on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 1:33 PM

NYT:

The Kentucky census worker found hanging from a tree with the word “fed” scrawled on his chest staged his own death to look like a homicide so that his son could collect his life insurance, the authorities said Tuesday.

Oh, thank god! I mean, that's horrible, yes, but so much better than him getting murdered for taking the Census.

That being said, what a dick way to frame your suicide. Good job fanning liberal paranoia, guy.

Kentucky authorities, Johnny Law in his snake skin boots, said it were an accident. The man just slipped on a banana peel, folks.

@2 my thoughts exactly. Way to go out like an asshole.

Didn't Dan say this was further evidence that the right was becoming unhinged and was about to murder us all? Or was that someone else?

Stop jumping to conclusions before the facts are in.

Was "FED" carved backwards on his chest? Was the carving implement found nearby? If not, was there evidence of a blood trail in his car or from wherever he walked/drove with "FED" carved into his chest? Was evidence of blood found on his hand from carving "FED" into his own chest? Skeptical minds want to know!

Should have known something was up when his books from Beck Sayings Of The Month Club arrived in the post ...

I don't suppose the insurance company had anything to do with generating this hypothesis?

From what I'd read, there was no evidence showing that anyone had handled the rope, the duct tape, etc. other than him.

@2: It was done to cash in on a life insurance policy for his son, so he had to make it look like a murder (or an accident.) I work in reference book publishing, and the crazy comments about the Census have been big news for us, so I imagine it was an even more common talk at the Census Bureau... it was probably on his mind.

@6: "FED" was written in black ink. Not carved into flesh.

Reconsider that particular detail of your skepticism.

@10 thanks for setting me straight. I didn't read the article because of the registration requirement, and didn't take the time to look it up elsewhere. I wonder what it says about me that I just assumed it was carved in? It was certainly a better story that way.

I call bullshit on the suicide.

His hands were duct taped.

How do you do that to yourself and then hang yourself?

Bullshit.

It's so good to know that you guys know more than the FBI. Be sure to give them your contact info so if they get in a jam they can give you a call.

In the end, people will just believe what they want to believe. Dead men make no confessions.

@14 He was hanging from a tree, right? Climb up on the branch, hook up the noose, tape your hands, jump off the branch. It seems straightforward to me.

But how do you tape your own hands and make it convincing?

Well, I certainly wouldn't suspect the Kentucky State Police of either incompetence or ulterior motives in making their state look less inhospitable to federal workers. I'm sure they did a very professional job. Ha!

Somewhere, there are a couple of hillbillies laughing their asses off that they not only got away with this, but the victim gets blamed for offing himself.

So now they figured it out, the son won't get the money? Meaning, this poor loving father's death was for nothing... that is beyond sad, absolutely tragic.
