Florida To Offer Incentives To Filmmakers With One Little Tiny String Attached...

Posted by on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 at 10:24 AM

For Christ's sake:

A proposed incentive package for the film industry being considered by Florida lawmakers would likely exclude films with gay characters, the Palm Beach Post reported. Lawmakers hope the $75 million package of tax credits and incentives will entice filmmakers to set up shop in Florida. The bill's so-called family-friendly tax credit, however, discourages the production of movies that include depictions of gay families. The tax credit would only be available to films that do not exhibit or imply “nontraditional family values.”

Good, a movie about Florida's governor would be boring anyway

"Non traditional family values" It's good to know they have some values. I wonder what they are?

The sweetest irony is that the proposed rule would allow gay actors, even an all-gay cast, to portray straight characters. Real Gay is okay, Stage Gay is not.

What would they do if they wanted to film Shakespeare the way it was originally performed? (ie men playing all the female rolls?)

But seriously, this wouldn't shock anyone...in 1933 Berlin.

What about movies where straight people have affairs? Or where straight people rape each other, or commit other violent crimes. Would that be ok?

@1, nope, a movie about Charlie Crist would definitely be out of the question.

They should call it the Goebbels credit.

In response to this news Michael Bay & Jerry Bruckheimer are going to shoot Birth of a Nation 2: The Rise of Family Values. Production is set for 2011,....

So, what I don't understand is why a state with a presumably large gay population (admittedly, most of it in south Florida, maybe a bit more in central), and with a significant gay tourist base in a state where tourism is by far the number one industry puts up with this shit??? Why doesn't the gay community and its supporters organize a worldwide boycott of Florida, along with well timed demonstrations by the resident gay community.

Yeah, I know, the yahoos in Jacksonville and on the Redneck Riviera won't give a shit, or may even be happy about it, but business leaders and legislators in the southern half of the state will care and they can put pressure on the governor and legislature to get past this bat shit crazy, reactionary, fearful anti-gay shit. Time for a revolution.

@3: I have an idea.

Kiss Me, Kate with an all-gay cast.

Fred can by played by Alan Cumming or similar and Lilli can be played by Portia de Rossi.

No portrayals of gay characters, but everyone is as gay as the day is long.

Hey Transpo Guy, my partner and I live in Jacksonville and we give a shit! So do the other gays in this city.

But I know what you mean. Our Avondale/Riverside neighborhood is a small oasis of gentility and calm in a sea of mud flaps, monster trucks, rebel flags and Baptists.

We're doing the best we can given the circumstances.

That cuts it. It's a perfect time to call for another boycott of Florida orange juice. Let's cost the mutherfuckers twice that amount.

Gay 'movies' could mean many things, most of which would in fact be completely unrelated with the promotion of family values.

I would so watch that. I would (cough) also love to just subplant the cast of the l word into the movies. Bc I would watch Shane do just about anything, I've got a good imagination... it could totally work.

A huge Catholic community in conjunction with a large community of garden-variety rednecks outweighs the political heft of whatever gays exist in the south of Florida. However, Dan Savage should call for a boycott of tourism to FL. Not because of the gay thing. Just on GP.

filmmakers across the country should get together & organize a boycott of filmmaking in florida. any filmmaker who were considering FL as a shooting locale should announce that they're instead shooting in some other state.

I'm sure the same could be said of many 'straight' movies. On the other hand I could imagine, say, a movie about Dan's relationship with his mother, particularly the story he shared in this post. And it would be a very strong, very positive promotion of family values--real family values, that is, not the false kind so often pushed by prejudiced people.

Meh on the other hand, I really don't have much interest in watching films that are appropriate for the whole family. Do we really need to promote films that are good for the kids to watch, don't they have enough movies being made every year anyway? I stopped embracing wholesome films when I discovered that some films have gratuitous nudity in them, so I guess I won't be watching many films made in florida any time soon.

This strikes me as fully and completely legal.

Also, I find it incredibly unfair that Florida gets the Everglades, Keys, and tropical diving. Sigh. Can't they be taken over by a blue state I don't have to feel bad visiting?

I wonder how "traditional" they want to get? Do they want to go back to where a marriage was basically a financial transaction between the father of the bride and her future husband? Do all the moms in these movies stay home? Does no one ever get divorced? Just what values are "traditional family values"?

Florida is a great case study of what happens to a society when you have too many old people concentrated in one place. Don't get me wrong, I like old people- but I think they should spend a good chunk of their social time in the company of younger people who can sharpen their prone-to-senility heads and get them up to date on how things are done these days.
