Dogsbite, which conducts research and education on dog attacks, has released a report that finds Pit Bulls perpetrated 56 percent of all the fatal dog attacks in the US over the past five years. "Our combined results of just over five years show that pit bulls and rottweilers continue to be the top killers, just as they were in the 1979 to 1998 CDC report," the group says. "During the 1980s and 1990s, fatal dog attacks averaged 17 per year. The death-by-dog-bite rate now is nearly double this amount at over 30 per year and largely due to pit bulls."

Dogsbite claims to be "the only source of information on this topic that is not owned, controlled, or funded by pit bull breeders, owners, veterinarian or animal welfare groups." Meanwhile over at the website RealPitBull, under a section called "myths," the writers claim "the actual number of attacks attributable to American Pit Bull Terriers is considerably lower than represented."
