Would a Straight Guy Wear That Belt?

Posted by on Fri, Jun 11, 2010 at 4:36 PM

Maybe that shirt—maybe—and maybe those pants. Maybe. But that belt?

500x_0611_schocking.jpg

Never. GOP Congressman—and suspected cocksucker—Aaron Schock does his part to keep those rumors alive. Via Gawker.

Hell, even that shirt/pant combo is super faggy...and the guy wearing them is *hot!*...the GOP needs to stop having hotties in their ranks...

what I want to see is the Schock/Scott Brown porno. Obviously Schock is the bottom in that scenario.

I don't know anything about Schock. There may be many reasons to think he's gay but about the clothing specifically, on another thread, Gloria had written "Men have plenty of [clothing] options; they just don't care for them in North America. Go to Japan or Italy and you'll see how fucking gorgeous men look, all ages. We need that culture shift here, that's all."

I responded that one of the reasons straight men don't avail themselves of those options is that, if they do, men (and women) will assume they're gay. And observations like Dan's help support that.

I have to agree with Roma. I don't see how that poor 'special' man's outfit indicates whether or not he loves the cock. His eyebrows are very well groomed, but straight men groom also. Re: the belt...I think my 8 year old daughter has a belt like that, she won't wear it because it 'looks stupid'. And she's right.

Most of the gay men I know dress far better than that. Except my brother in law's partner--he dresses like a 12 year old.

Canuck 41
@39 To clear things up (speaking as a former east coast preppie myself), if he *were* preppy, the shirt would be solid pale pink, not magenta plaid, the pants would be khaki, flat front, not white, the belt--sweet jesus, the belt--would not be turquoise nylon webbing (that's an artificial fibre, for God's sake), but rather a "whimsical" needlepoint with little martini glasses, or whales, or labradors on it, http://www.smathersandbranson.com/web/ca… , and by his late 20's, sad to say, he would already be sporting a bit of a belly thanks to his hard partying frat days catching up with him. But I agree with the other posters here, while he doesn't look straight, I can't imagine any self-respecting gay coming up with that belt.

@22 Roma, your comment implies that being gay is a bad thing or that some straight men perceiving being gay as a straight thing. When we say someone looks gay, it's either a compliment and, if that person happens to be a homophobe, an identification of a possible hypocrite. You should start your campaign to get straight men to dress better by addressing their homophobia (and apparently your own).

42/Redhawk: When we say someone looks gay, it's either a compliment and, if that person happens to be a homophobe, an identification of a possible hypocrite.

Oh, I'm sure you intend it as compliment, but I can guarantee you that the vast majority of straight men would not take it that way.

You should start your campaign to get straight men to dress better by addressing their homophobia (and apparently your own).

If you would have read the rest of my comment to Gloria, you would have seen this: "And women can make that assumption too. I don't dress super-stylish but I try to put a little zip into my attire and on more than one occasion, a woman has told me she thought I was gay because of how I dressed." I've had gay guys come on to me and it doesn't piss me off or freak me out or make me question my masculinity. I've just told them I like women, not men.

I don't think fear-of-being-thought-gay is the only reason that straight men in the U.S. don't avail themselves of more clothing options, like they do in Italy (or France), and as Gloria says they do in Japan. Another reason, of course, is that straight men simply don't care for them. But I do think that fear is one of the reasons.

@44, funny you should mention Italians. I live in Europe (not in Italy) and the joke around here is that many Italian men dress, well, gay. That's not to say that they're effeminate by any means (goodness knows a woman walking down the street in Italy would never get that impression lol) but that they dress in a manner that in other parts of the world are associated with gay men.

As for men not wanting to be dressy because of fear of being considered gay, I agree that could be a part of it. I think its that the emotional math doesn't work out. Dress nice and you'll get shit from submoronic straight men for being "faggish", though women will like it. Don't dress nice and don't get shit and women might still go for you.

"[Italian men] dress in a manner that in other parts of the world are associated with gay men."

Lynx, I agree. I also think that's true of men in France. One of my favorite photos from my last visit to Italy was of my then-girlfriend posing with an older (probably 60s) guy in a doorway near the Trevi Fountain. He was dressed in a gold suit, not the kind of thing a straight guy in the U.S. would wear.

Dress nice and you'll get shit from submoronic straight men for being "faggish", though women will like it. Don't dress nice and don't get shit and women might still go for you.

Women in the U.S. definitely like it when men dress nice but I think for most of them their idea of "nice" is the classic American male look, not the more-stylish-and-colorful Italian male look.

What country are you in?

@48, Spain, most of the time. Men here are not at all like the Italians, at least in terms of their dress. Maybe its just a matter of how men and women percieve attractiveness. Men are more visual, which puts pressure on women to be more visually appealing. Of course, a good deal of cultural sexist bullshit could also be coming into play. In any event, there doesn't seem to be the idea that males have to present themselves in a certain visual way to females, though dressing nicely never hurts, sans the baby blue belts lol.

The belt reminds me of the ones that came free with my slacks, back in the days when I shopped in the teen department of JC Penney's (late 80s-early 90s).

When I got my clothes home and cut the tags off, I pulled the belts out and tossed them in the corner. They'd sit there for six or eight months, then the next time I cleaned my room they'd go in the trash.

Thanks Lynx. If you're American, cool that you've found a way to live there. The only place I've been in Spain is Barcelona. I remember men there didn't look as stylish as those in Italy but they seemed more so than American men.

I agree with you that "men are more visual, which puts pressure on women to be more visually appealing" (although women certainly do care about looks a lot too) but that has a counterpart in women being more interested in status/money, which puts pressure on men to be more successful. So both sexes experience pressure, or expectations, just in different ways.

Aaron Schock, though pretty cute and blessed with the motivation to work out so he's personally blessed himself (and us) with a nice body, is, though he pings certain people's gayday, sadly, not gay. He's a very specific type of Central Illinois/Peoria-bred metrosexual that slightly missed the mark and just ends up seeming gay to the rest of the world. If he was 5 years older, he'd have been in high school/college the same time as me (he reminds me of the first guy I ever slept with) and I'd be totally bragging about it, but a short while later, when my brother was in school you couldn't use the same standards to guess such things (which led me to think that my brother was having sex with all his straight friends and all his friends I thought were straight were the ones he was doing it with)

Either that, I'm totally wrong and Schock's a big old faggot.
