Hawaii's governor—a Republican—is under a lot of pressure from conservatives and Christians to veto the bill. Remember that when someone suggests that gay people should just, you know, be reasonable, compromise, and accept civil unions instead of pressing for marriage equality. People who oppose marriage rights for same-sex couples also oppose civil unions. No one is handing us civil unions on a platter—we have to fight even for second-class citizenship and separate-but-equal, marriage-lite consolation prizes.
