Gonging is more like it. As I was watching last night, I just couldn't stop chuckling through the whole interview.

Pinging? Mine went off the scale.

Shirvell should get a girlfriend and a real life and keep himself busy... but I kinda doubt that will ever happen. We'll no doubt read about him at some point in the future being arrested at a highway rest stop with a big old c*ck in his mouth.

And this isn't the first time that young Mr Shirvell has raged against the homosexualists. Here is an item from 2005 when he had his panties all in a bunch over a rainbow sticker at a local pizza joint.

@5 Mike Cox, the Michigan AG, was a major force behind Michigan's anti-gay marriage amendment. The AG, who has admitted to having an affair, believes that the measure would "protect" marriage.

The AG's office has said, ""Mr. Shirvell's personal opinions are his and his alone and do not reflect the views of the Michigan Department of Attorney General," Cox said in the written statement provided by his office to CNN's "AC 360" Tuesday night. "But his immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear."

What I don't get is how they know he hasn't been posting and or updating his blog on the taxpayer dime at work. Was there an investigation? If so, couldn't some journalist pull a FOIA request to see the documents of such an investigation? Why is the media buying the story that this douchbag is really doing all this on his own time?

Headline torn from his blog post:

"Arrogance on Display: Armstrong & Fellow ‘Gay’ Activists Repeatedly Show TOTAL Disrespect for Law Enforcement"

Now repeat that in the voice you heard in the interview. My gaydar just burst into flames. Very pretty, rainbow-colored flames.

I think we need to understand that these closet cases are another side of the High School issue the It Gets Better Project is trying to help. They hate us because they hate themselves, and they hate themselves because nobody's ever loved them for who they are. They're hidden so far behind their mask, hurt so deep, that it will take a great deal of love and support to heal them.

To the A.A.G. in the video: Come out, sir. Please. In Dan's own words: It gets better.

Anderson got it right, he's obsessed with this young man. I'd be seriously concerned for the safety of his victim, he really strikes me as the "if I can't have you no one will" sort. Someone unhinged enough to do something like this from the position he's in is obviously not stable and is likely to be a danger to others.

Well, Dan, it appears some Christians have another take on the guy, calling him "brawny" with "expressive eyes." From Christwire:

"Andrew Leo Shirvell is a hero’s hero, a brawny and ambitious man with expressive eyes and the buzz cut of someone who relishes military precision. Exemplifying the true rewards for love of God and Country, this compassionate Christian went from being a humble student at the University of Michigan to a widely respected graduate of the Ave Maria School of Law in Naples, Florida to his current job as Deputy Attorney General for the great state of Michigan."

I call gaydar on Christwire.

In regards to First Amendment Rights - when exactly does "Free Speech" become harassment ? Because this self hating, closet case works for the State, he's entitled to "say" what he wants without repercussions from the state. But it seems to me that this isn't simply free speech anymore. it's bullying, intimidation, harassment - and those are NOT First Amendment Rights.

For example - if you commit liable, slander, defamation of character, you are infringing on other's rights, which CLEARLY by calling him a "Nazi" and "Satans" whatever, Shivell has done. Therefore Shivell needs to be fired immediately.

What really gets me --because I've read so much of his website because I'm apparently a masochist of the not-fun variety - is the section where he talks about Chris Armstrong removing posts on his Facebook profiles about "gay orgies" in the dorms, which were obviously* jokes. The problem with this guy is that if he ever came out of the closet, he'd probably end up being disappointed because even the most demented, debauched of us (I'm including myself in this, so feel no qualms speaking for the group) couldn't keep up with his active fantasy life.

* -- Okay so maybe it's not 100% certain that those were jokes. But I'd bet the possibility of me stumbling on a gay twenty-something college dorm orgy on it. (The possibility is not much, but even as low as it is, its value in my portfolio, especially compared to the rest of my net worth, is quite high.)

Besides thinking he was gay, I kept thinking of ChrisChan, this autistic dude who is a sort of meme on the internets (who also happens to be a homophobe, coincidentally).

What IS it with all the crazies lately? Is it just me, or did the volume get turned way up in the last few years?

Maybe I'm becoming an old fart bemoaning how things used to be back in my day, but it seems as if there used to be at least *slightly* more of a public filter on crazy and mean, though there was still plenty of both in less public discourse.

Whappen?? In my dim memory, at least, it does seem as if people used to feel some minor level of *shame* to talk like this. Even my really whacknut grandmother had a clue that she might be judged harshly for talking crazy, and would cringe a bit when she said the evil crap she really thought.

Now nobody cringes. It's like they feel they have permission, and it's okay to be a raging psycho in public.

Shirvell really needs to work on his material if he's ever going to make it in stand-up. Honestly, this same topic was already done by George Burns, who said it much better: "In my day people got married and had kids. Now they live together, have kids, and if the kids turn out all right then they get married."

So, how do we send email to Mike Cox? I want this guy's state funded salary to end. I suspect Shirvell's appreciation of external opinion is stunted. But his boss may not be so immune to the fact that Shirvell is bringing very negative publicity to his department.

Why would you continue to allow someone you think has "bad judgment and immaturity" to work for you in the Attorney General's office anyway? That's a nice statement to the world right there. "We actually just sit around cyber-stalking college kids between cases. Thanks for the tax dollars."

Patti @82: I don't think anyone on the blog was saying Asperger's made the guy a stalker. I think instead they were saying, (i) he's a stalker (ii) he's gay, and, (iii) a separate issue, he is sufficiently neuro-atypical -- yeah maybe Asperger's, but probably something else -- that he lacks the self-awareness to know how abundantly transparent traits (i) and (ii) are to anyone who communicates with him. Whatever his neuro-issue is, it's actually a good thing because it makes him much less effective as a stalker. Good stalking requires the ability to effectively dissemble. My favorite part is when he goes on the "I sense anger" jag. You just know that some figure in his sad past, some would-be helping figure, a parent, a guidance counselor, a therapist, used that line on him, and now it's something he says when he's desparately trying to sound like a responsible grown-up.

patti, I'm gonna be this thread's (self-diagnosed and self-appointed) aspie. I wasn't offended much by the comments that this obsessed weirdo might be a bit autistic. I don't know that it's fair to call David Schmader, gregus, and mitten "assholes" like the people who treated your son badly. They may just be trying to understand, and they seem much closer to the mark than other commenters calling him a "psychopath" or "retarded".

He doesn't seem stupid, and it doesn't seem like he doesn't care what people think, it's just that he thinks that what he's doing is positive and reasonable. I feel a strange affinity with him.

I'll tell you what I thought (and said to my mother) when I saw this jerk: "That could be me saying those things, if only I believed the things he does."

Misha, I don't think one Aspie can speak for every Aspie's experience, or for me, just like one gay person can't speak for everyone's gay experience. I'm glad you weren't offended by the comments, but I was, and my son was.

I'm late to this party, but it's still ripe! What. The. Fuck? How is there not a ceaseless barrage of phone calls to the Michigan A.G.'s office to get this guy out? No, you can't be fired for being a shithead on your own time, but certainly there must be something done about public servants behaving like this. He's clearly not fit for public service. This is disgusting.

It appears that Mr. Shirvell is taking some "personal leave"...

"I'm glad you weren't offended by the comments, but I was, and my son was."

Well, big whoop. You probably offended people by calling them assholes for simply observing in this man what they think might be a touch of the autism.

What do you think you heard that was so offensive? Let's use an analogy.

It shouldn't be offensive to vegetarians to say that HItler was a vegetarian (though he wasn't, apparantly), unless they claim that not eating meat was the cause of the holocaust. And until someone claims that this guy's behavior and intolerance of homosexuals was CAUSED by his (possible) slight autism, I don't think you should be offended either.

I think you assumed the worst in those comments that offended you.

Patti, I'm sensing anger in your voice and I don't understand where that's coming from.

Because this guy is so ridiculous to anyone who sees him talking, he is less of a threat than someone with more ability to assess how they might be perceived.

I find it astounding that this video is real, and not some comedy skit. Really!

The most fascinating thing this video holds for me is to show just how smart and educated a person can come off whilst defending the most absurd of positions, because if there are people like him out there (extreme nut jobs who are also Lawyers), then there are likely many more.

If there are people like him, then there are probably many more with more subtle variations on whatever condition he has, and it is those people who will do more damage, because they might not be detected as readily, but they will be very articulate, and they will be as capable as him in getting positions of power like Lawyers. This fool is pretty harmless. but the fact someone like him exists and is a lawyer, is kind of chilling.

wow, reverse this to have some outed gay man harassing some closed "straight" retrograde college student. Dude would be fired so fast.

Shit is so fucked.

Consider the reverse: some out gay state law enforcement officer harassing some homophobe (closeted perhaps) undergrad. Dude would be fired immediately, the shit would be all over the news.

Shit is so fucked.

Cox isn't firing him because Shirvell has something on him. They've been buddies for years. Seriously. And I think Cox is scared of something Shirvell knows or maybe they had a tryst or something. I totally see this ending as a big gay scandal.

Patti @ 84 "My favorite part is when he goes on the "I sense anger" jag. You just know that some figure in his sad past, some would-be helping figure, a parent, a guidance counselor, a therapist, used that line on him, and now it's something he says when he's desparately trying to sound like a responsible grown-up."

I think you've nailed it.

Yup. Took all of 10 seconds.

I kind of feel sorry for him--this is what closets--and the church--does to people.

Wow, what an inarticulate moron. None of his answers even come close to a) answering Cooper's questions, or b) resembling any kind of logic.
