Love the attitude, love the message, etc., but the point is to reassure Mr. and Mrs. Statistical Average that gays are, in fact, just like them in most respects.

So kids cussing?

Wow what a dumb move.

@12, besides the kids there are transwomen (or drag queens? Sorry if I'm making some trans faux pas) as well as two guys making out and two women making out.

The upshot? This shit isn't made to convince John and Jane Doe. That's not the friggen idea. This is made to excite and entertain those of us already on the equality bus. I love the soft-focus we-are-so-normal-it-hurts equality ads as much as the next ally, but damn if it doesn't feel good to see "you think gay marriage is offensive, well watch THIS". It's a pep-talk, something to get us into the fighting spirit. After reading about Mr. Fierce Advocate (against equality) all day, I really could use a pick-me-up.

what @12 said.

you girls need to pick a lane and quit weaving.

are homosexual "normal" and harmless and just like everyone else so what's the harm of letting them marry and raise kids?
if so crude rude in-your-face and children throwing the F bomb is a poor strategy.

or is this the true colour of the homosexual lifestyle?
F this and F that and especially
F you, Real America and F what you think?
feel good to get it off your chest?

cum on girls, shout it with us....
FUCK YOU, REAL AMERICA!
FUCK WHAT YOU BELIEVE!!
WE DON"T GIVE A FUCKING SHIT!!!!

wasn't that fun?!

Guess what.
The F bomb can go both ways.

Fuck your perverted deviant behavior.
Fuck your perversion of marriage.
Fuck your disgusting deviant "orientation".
Fuck your distorted warped counterfeit "family".

You haven't fooled anyone.

You will never get from us what you so cravenly want.

Validation.

We both know what you do is perverted and twisted.

You know it better than us.
You can't hide it.
The weaker among you can't keep up the facade.
It makes Dan feel better to blame Christians for what eats homosexuals up from the inside.
But the facts wither and disintegrate his lie.

You can't find peace within.
You'll never find peace within.
People at peace with themselves and their choices don't need validation from others.
But you do.
Boy do you ever.
You think if you can force us to say it is normal maybe even YOU can believe it.
But you know it isn't. Normal.
And we know it.

Change the laws.
Pervert marriage to suit your deviant behavior.
Brainwash the rising generation.
It won't bring you peace.
Only more fellow tortured souls.

cum on girls-
shout it with us-
this time with FEELING....
FUCK YOU, REAL AMERICA!
FUCK WHAT YOU BELIEVE!!
WE DON"T GIVE A FUCKING SHIT!!!!

good.
cause you won't be marrying Terri anytime soon.
we don't think it's a very rational choice
but if you enjoy screaming FUCK YOU
more than strolling down the aisle go for it.

"Love It!", Dan?
sure you do.
you and the HomoRadical fringe of the Liberal 19% of America.
a fringe of 19% isn't much.
which is why even the Democraps can ignore you;
actually not 'ignore';
screw you over is more like it;
daily and with impunity.

cause when you get off on screaming FUCK YOU
you soon find everyone wants to return the favor.
Obama.
The Democraps.
Real America.

have you noticed that, Dan?
have you noticed that Obama and the Democraps daily invite you to FUCK OFF?
do you "Love It!"?
Did you notice the voters in 30 (or is it 40?...) states
each and everyone telling you to FUCK OFF?
do you "Love It!"?

sure you do.

(ps.
Obama would have explained it to you himself but Danny cancelled his Slog account.
Pussy.

You guys can shit your pants about "hand-wringing" if you want, but all I'm pointing out is that this will get used against the LGBT movement. I know it wasn't produced for Mr. and Mrs. 2.4 children, but it will be shown to them.

Think about the airtime "Listen, it's just us, so I'm gonna tell you that Obama is a Marxist nigger"-type videos/emails/flyers get among the left.

As we speak, this email is being forwarded by more gay-bashers than gay-supporters. It's already been forwarded to me in a chain mail by relatives.

It's really sad that I know this line by heart, but @41 reminds me of that part in Top Gun where the guy says to Maverick (did I just type that?) "Your family name isn't the best. They have to present a united, lilywhite facade so as not to offend Joe Fundie (who is banging his secretary when he can get time away from his Church duties)......got it.

It has been my experience that individuals who want to get their panties in a twist will find reasons to wad up their panties. It has also been my experience that individuals who want to justify discriminating will grasp at straws to continue justifying their position. I would consider this video a piece of straw.

What I'm trying to say is that even with out the word "fuck" or kissing, individuals would have their panties in a twist over this. We can't open a closed mind. It has been my experience that there is only one thing that has the power to pull an individual on the fence about marriage equality, employment nondiscrimination, DADT, etc., down, and that is learning that someone they love is being discriminated against. Some individuals on the fence may regret the suffering of an LGBT person being denied access to their loved one in an emergency, but a moment of compassionate feelings doesn't move them to action. It is only when it is their loved one that is being denied, or bullied, that the need for justice becomes apparent. And, sadly, even then some weren't really on the fence at all, their minds have long been made up and they were trying to avoid the discussion or having you think badly of them the entire time. They will accept their love one being discriminated against or bullied in much the same way that they blame people for being poor as a result of their being lazy. A mind that is closed can only be opened from the inside.

For what it is worth I liked the video.

Yes! This just made my day. I'm so sick of trying to coax people into doing what's right, only to have them turn around and peel away at the rights they had to be persuaded to grant when they realise the reality isn't as cushy as they expected. Man some people are stupid. Maybe I should write a Simple English Wikipedia version of what I wrote.

I liked the video, too. But try to release your mind from the Manichean grip your black-and-white worldview has on it for a split second.

Look at what I'm saying: children cussing is going to feed the flames of hate. That's it. I'm not hating on the kissing or the cussing. I personally am not even hating on the kids cussing, which is provocative in a stale, predictable way, but still does the job of catching your attention.

But no matter what I say, people like canuck will just assume I'm a gay-bashing KKK member or something.

Isn't discussion fun?
Posted by luke1249 on October 15, 2010 at 8:57 AM
Dingo 50
Maybe because your username is a Bible passage, 49.

Isn't it obvious that this video isn't aimed at changing anyone's mind? It's a fundraising video aimed at people who already support marriage equality and advertising the group and its website.
Posted by Dingo on October 15, 2010 at 9:24 AM
Canuck 51
@49 Who's exaggerating now? ("people like canuck will just assume I'm a gay-bashing KKK member or something.")
No, I was responding to your idea that videos like this aren't a good idea, because they will be used against LGBTs by conservatives. The converse of that idea is that if this had been a heartfelt appeal by friends/family/children of LGBTs to please see the light, that this would have had a better chance of changing minds? THAT'S what I disagree with. As Kim said, minds open from the inside. All of the quiet, unassuming same-sex couples who have been profiled in marriage sections of papers, or on the news haven't shifted the ultra-right on this issue, so I doubt this video has burned any bridges, because that makes the assumption that there were bridges to burn.
Luke, if anything, you come across as Canadian on this issue. I say this as someone who loves Canada and Canadians, but they do try very hard not to offend people. While this makes for harmonious living most of the time, there are times when righteous indignation is called for, and that's when a little American "shout it out" is okay. IMHO.
Posted by Canuck on October 15, 2010 at 9:25 AM
luke1249 52
Dingo, You do realize that almost any combination [Evangelist name] + [Number between 11 and, what, 5000] will produce a Bible passage, right?

My point is that the children cussing part (only that part) will indeed burn one or two bridges. Will this video set gay rights back a decade? No. But it's not moving the discussion forward. That's all I said. Get called a hater for my trouble.

And by the way, I'm all for videos of gays kissing, probably the most provocative (in terms of thought and emotion) thing on-the-fence straights can see. I know it took me a while to get used to. Well, obviously, seeing chicks kiss wasn't that big a deal.

Ricardo,

I posted this to my facebook knowing my friends would love it as much as I did... and then remembered that my father's rightwing nutjob evangelical family has me friended on facebook, for reasons passing my understanding (they spend a significant portion of their time pretending I don't exist). I almost deleted the link, out of "respect" for their "values", even though they don't respect mine. And then I remembered that among the rightwing nutjobs on that side of the family who have me friended are my 15 and 18 year old cousins. The 18 year old just shipped off to a state university this year. It's still Alabama, but she's being openly exposed to *actual* LGBT people and *actual* non-christians for the first time in her life, myself excluded. So, my link to the video's still up. There's little hope for my dad's generation of the family - the branch is pretty well rotten, shall we say - but maybe those two girls can learn to say "fuck hate" instead of "my friend, well, she's a [n-word] but a *good* one," and "that guy over there is a [f-word]." (to which I usually respond, "well, I walk like a drunk [yay cerebral palsy!] so what do you call *me*?" and they get embarrassed and thoughtful. Progress is slow with the early-indoctrinated.)

Oh wow. Don't you believe spewing hate towards Christians/Republicans is very similar to the hate some of them spew at gays? Have we not learned as adults that two wrongs do not make a right? This may raise support for the cause- for people who are already for it-but it will only sadden and hurt those who do not believe there should be equality. This video creates an even bigger gap for those people. Bad, bad move.

@68 Oh, pointless punctuation poster, it wouldn't have mattered what the protesters were saying, or who they were, some people (dare I say, the sort of people who would attend a rally like this) would think it was blasphemous to interrupt the president, or to cause him any embarrassment. The protesters could have been saying "lower infant mortality rates!" and they would have been booed. It was the action (protest) not the people doing it that made the rally goers uncomfortable. Perhaps you'd be wise to stick to things you know, like....okay, it's just way too early in the morning for me to think back over your comments and try to find something you've ever sounded intelligent about.

So, who exactly is profiting off of this? Where is the money from the t-shirt sales going? The HRC? Some other gay organization that is primarily meeting the needs of a privileged white LGBTQ peoples? One of those organizations that consistently fails to address the issues trans & gender queer peoples? It's funny, I agree, but I do think we need to question the priorities here. It's nice when the LGBTQ agenda has things besides marriage and adoption on it. It's nice when LGBTQ organizations do completely free acts of resistance in solidarity with other struggles instead of just asking for money without letting anyone know where it goes, in the vein of Pride at Work.

Let me first say I love the video. I love the attitude (this issue deserves as much attitude as can be thrown at it), and i LOVE the delivery from everyone involved. I understand this video is not meant to sway those that are against Gay Marriage - it's meant to "rally the base" of those that support it.

However, i do think that having the kids curse was not the right move. All this does is give ammo for the FOX NEWS-types to say "See? See? we were right! gay parents ARE a bad influence!"

This video WILL be used by those that oppose gay marriage, and specifically, it will be the kids that they focus on.

I personally have no problem with kids being in the video - I agree that their parents should have the right to marry. But they could be in it without spouting f-bombs.

@12 if you have to have a bible verse for a name, Luke 12:49 is a really good one! Whether you are religious or not.

@66 Where is exactly is the hate? They're pointing out the hypocrisy of the arguments of the Christian right, but they're not saying that they're going to kill them or that they'll burn in hell or whatever. Taking a stand + swearing ≠ hate speech. I'm getting really tired of the pussy liberalism that says we always have to have calm, reasonable conversations with people who don't even want us to open our mouths, let alone have an intelligent discussion with us. There is no reasoning with them. So fuck 'em.

If your base is motivated by saying "Fuck" and by having children use foul crude language maybe it's not worth motivating.
Is that what homosexuality is about?

also saying Fuck, like homosexual kissing, doesn't have any shock value anymore.
it's just crude and boring.

I just love all the appeasers on here who think we should bend over and take more sand in our Vaseline from the right. Who the FUCK cares what religiotards think and the MORE we speak out like this the more they will hide in their religious whack job closets.

Great, they've just reduced the gay-marriage debate to puerile potty-mouthing.

If republicans put out a video like this on abortion, you'd all call it inflammatory, hateful, and infantile. I can just imagine everyone posting it to their facebook profiles an example of how EVIL the right is.

The positive response towards this campaign baffles me. Calling your opponents "fuckwads" won't win you any sympathy.
