Jaq Chartier and Dirk Park have just finished building out a new art space in a building that was formerly a nightclub in the International District—with 15 studios for rent, a gallery that'll be run by Park, and potential retreat-residency space.

Artists are signed up and moving in, including Gil Blank and Maija Fiebig. Studios range from 150 to 400 square feet, priced at "market rate," Chartier said. The rooms are pristine, with high ceilings, smooth walls, floors ready to be spilled on, bright lighting, individually controlled heaters, and built-in ventilation fans.

Park will open the gallery, a small social/project-oriented space for works on paper, in 2011. He doesn't know yet which artists he'll present. "I think there are a lot of great artists in Seattle right now who don't have any place to show," he says.

Naming the building is complicated. Its address is 519 S Main St, but calling it 519 is too close to 619 Western (set to be demolished in 2012 when the tunnel is built). Its historical name is the Henry Tengu Kubota building, but calling it the HTK building comes too close to the TK (Tashiro Kaplan Artist Lofts) in Pioneer Square. There's a sign nearby that says "Standard," so Standard Space may end up the name.

Chartier, a painter, will have her own studio in the building. She's been managing the 30 studios at 1426 South Jackson Street for 16 years, and she'll keep doing that, too. She and Park also run Aqua Art Miami, which this year returned to its original hotel location and, the couple said, was a success and will continue next year.
