I'm going to have to eat my pet hamster with some nice red wine.

Either that or choose to not eat the hamster.

But those newsrooms are filling up fast with pizza, and the red and yellow jackets are flooding the TV channels so it's #wasnow @3 for the Chianti-friendly win!

or was that w(h)ine ...

Eh, it snowed all day where I work in Auburn. I drove through whiteout conditions on I-5 until Southcenter, where it was nothing but blue sky all the way to Greenlake. Sure made for an easy commute home!

This reminds me of that dumb car commercial that shows people panicking at the first sign so snow flakes.

@Dominic Just because you're one Seattle's most intelligent/handsom writers doesn't give you liberty skip a work out when it comes to emergency preparedness.

I am sure Barb Graff and the many dedicated staff at the Office of Emergency Management would love for you to take this opportunity to remind people that being prepared for an emergency is what really matters.

Sincerely,
The Abominable Snowman

Actually, @9 has a good point.

OK, let's crowdsource this baby - what advice would you give people in Seattle about effective Snow handling:

1. Your car has a 1st and 2nd gear. Use em.
2. Don't tailgate. Drive slower. Yes, you're going to hit that cyclist.
3. Don't use your bicycle, those insane people in $100 a barrel oil-guzzling cars will kill you, cause they're tailgating you.
4. Fixies should just gun it down the hills, especially if there are hidden streetcar tracks.
5. Don't eat the Yellow Snow, K$sha.
6. We're All Gonna Die - EAT THE HAMSTERS!

@11

7. Make sure you're digital camera of choice is charged so you can get a little You Tube fame while filming and posting videos of people in cars failing at going up and down hills.

@15 - Yep. If nothing else, it's good practice for when they really need it.

If they don't personally clear my entire alley AND build me a snowman, I'm writing an angry letter to the Seattle Times.

(some very light flakes here in Fremont, but nothing sticking, had some good hail a couple hours ago)

This release is disturbingly placid. Where's the CAPS LOCK? Where are the ominous ellipses? What deviousness are they planning? Surely it's not anything so simple as readiness for a possible weather emergency?

I need more hype about this storm. It is just not at the Duhn-duhn-duhn stage yet.

Besides eveyone knows that hamsters taste like Solynt Green.

I love emergency operations! (especially when there's no emergency). It makes me feel all Jean Seburg in the movie "Airport", like I need to break out my mid-thigh, grey-and-gold uniform dress, with matching fur-trimmed parka.

I work in emergency management. EOCs are activated whenever there is the threat of severe weather, even if it isn't happening at this moment, and even if it doesn't happen at all. Down here in the deep south, EOCs activate whenever a tropical storm enters the Gulf, even if its predicted path doesn't take it anywhere near the city the EOC is in.

Which would you rather have - proactive emergency response (that anticipates the emergency...even if the emergency ends up not happening) or reactive emergency response (where the resources needed to responsd ot the emergency aren't in place, and they can't be moved into place because of whatever the emergent situation is)?

Canuck, remember, Frizzelle is not much of a beer man. If he were, he wouldn't go into a panic whenever the hard-liquor store goes dark.

And Catalina, you've made this two days in a row Jean Seberg's been mentioned here on Slog. Charles did yesterday referring to Breathless, but I must say I do love the Airport look:

Ah, see, gus, I forget this separation of church and state, as it were, with your hard lickuh vs. beer and wine merchants...(and sorry...not a beer drinker!? how did he get through college??) Just saw on the news tonight that somewhere else in Canada (Ontario?) they just passed [something] that will allow events to serve more liquor, and also allow people to drink it outside of the dreaded beer tent gulag. (You know, hard liquor is very hard on one's skin...)

It was hailing in Bellevue an few hours ago. Now it's a steady stream of snow, three inches on my patio and climbing. I've got to drive my wife to the hospital tomorrow for an operation. I'm hoping there'll be salt on the roads and snow plows tomorrow, but it's doubtful, because Seattle isn't really equipped for snow storms. I know a lot of us have come from places that have (I'm from Ontario, Canada), and so it's hilarious to us that Seattle freaks out over a little snow. But the reality is, we don't have the infrastructure to handle this sort of thing. So it IS dangerous, and it CAN shut the city down. I'm getting emails from co-workers right now stuck in traffic that looks like a parking lot.

Honestly: we piss and moan when Seattle does nothing when a weather disaster approaches. And we make ironic quote gestures and laugh it up when it does something. This is why I never want a job in public office.

Meanwhile it's 20 degrees and snowing like a sonofabitch here in lovely Spokane. A good 3-4 inches on the ground since this afternoon with no sign of stopping, or even letting up. Came out of work tonight and my car doors were frozen shut. Big big fun!

When the city doesn't respond to emergency weather conditions in the proper manner, people throw a fit.

When the city tries to be pro-active about impending weather conditions, people make jokes at their expense.

By "people" I mean "The Stranger".
