Love your column. Been a faithful reader since I was 15. That being said, I was disappointed to see your post about the Indian painting. I'm American Indian and imagery like the one you posted is one of the many ways Native people are made invisible and less than human. It may seem like a funny painting, but it's just symptomatic of a larger fucked-up phenomenom. Even a seemingly harmless painting of a child and a small dog serves to put Native people in the past and not deserving of being treated with dignity. I'm sure you followed all the coverage of the John T. Williams murder, which is the extreme of how far this dehumanization can go. It starts small.

There is a great blog, Native Appropriations, and a great one on tumblr called My Culture is Not a Trend. You should check them out. I was also wondering if you were familiar with Jessica Yee—she's a Native from Canada who is a LGBT and Native rights advocate.

I'm glad you didn't buy the painting!
