So, being an English-speaker who owns a computer connected to the tubes, I read the Franzen piece.

And... I pretty much agree with Slog tipper Paul.

What Franzen has written isn't very block-quotable. Sorry. (But, actually, not really, because that's part of what's great about his piece.) To distill as best I can: It's about technology and consumerism and graduation time and birds and, yes, the important differences between love and like. Read the whole thing. It's a good way to start a Wednesday.
