Mayor Mike McGinn will make his case against child prostitution and a company he says is enabling it tomorrow before mayors from around the US.

McGinn is assembling a group of mayors at the US Conference of Mayors in Los Angeles to discuss the role of city governments in regards to Village Voice Media (VVM) and its subsidiary Backpage.com, which have been linked to several cases of child prostitution. Sitting down with other city leaders would allow McGinn to ask their city governments to follow in Seattle's path. For example, McGinn declared a city boycott on all advertising in the Seattle Weekly, VVM's local affiliate, a couple weeks ago. He wants VVM to establish ID checks for people taking out adult advertisements and will withhold money until they do.

"Since we're going to the conference already, we will work on this separate issue as well," says spokesman Aaron Pickus, who noted that the meeting isn't part of the official conference agenda. Pickus would not say whether McGinn would specifically request other cities to withdraw advertising or request that VVM reform its practices, but he pointed out that Backpage.com lists advertisements by city, like Craigslist. McGinn's request to the other mayors at the meeting would "depend on who is there," Pickus says.
