Last night, John Hodgman went on The Daily Show to kick bookstores in the teeth. Maybe it's Hodgman's unfortunate facial hair (or, more likely, maybe it's because I've loved bookstores my whole life) but this feels more dickish to me than funny. The Daily Show has eviscerated things that I've loved before and done it well—Jason Jones's takedown of the New York Times is awful and beautiful and incredibly funny—but this feels like a misfire of tone to me.
