Not to take anything away from Rick Steves' generous donation of $1 million to two arts organizations in Edmonds. It's a very generous gift.

"With this donation," says Steves' spokesperson, "he is paying what he would have if federal tax cuts weren't put into place after President Clinton’s administration—and he is challenging other high-income people to do the same."

He is also, by the way, setting himself up for a nice $1 million tax write-off with this large charitable contribution.

And he's raising a question that I bet some of the number nerds who read Slog may be able to answer: Exactly how much does a travel guide guru have to have earned since 2001 in order to have banked a cool $1 million in Bush tax cut money?
