As of yesterday, the battle over liquor was already the most expensive initiative fight in state history, with the two sides putting in $25 million. But last night Costco reported contributing another $9 million to the campaign, according to records at the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission.

This makes Costco's campaign, the Yes on 1183 Coalition, which is attempting to privatize retail sales of liquor, the most heavily funded single initiative campaign in state history with nearly $23 million in contributions. (Previously, a campaign to repeal a soda tax in 2010 had the record with $16 million.)

The two sides of the liquor initiative—Costco is duking it out with the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America, who have put in $11.6 million to keep the state-run liquor stores—are having a $34 million war for the liquor market. Cheers?
